The site has Byrd Stadium down as a grass field but it's definitely field turf. It was installed before the start of last season. McDowell has the battle scars to prove it.
"I had some burns on my arms and my legs from the turf. I feel like I went 12 rounds with the turf. I felt every bit of it…that turf ain't nothing to play with," McDowell said. "If you love football, you're going to get beat up and sore. Came in, got some treatment, got in the cold tub, a massage.
"Hey, ready for another week, ready to grind."
McDowell set a career-high with 30 carries against Maryland. The 22 he had against Georgia in the season opener was his previous best.
"I didn't feel like I carried the ball that many times. I could have gone again," McDowell said. "To have 30 carries, to come away with the yardage, it felt pretty good."
In the 40-27 win over the Terps, McDowell rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns.
"It felt really good just to go out there and have fun," he said. "After watching the film on Sunday, I was like, wow. It's been a longtime coming. I get my touchdowns, the offensive linemen blocked phenomenal. It was very exciting.
"But, at the end of the day, it was like another week for me. Just go to the next game and keep chopping."
But he had to admit that the touchdowns "felt real good." And for good reason, McDowell hadn't reached pay dirt since crossing the goal line twice against Georgia Tech last season.
"I felt like a little kid. I jumped up for a second and I was like, ‘Hold on, act like you've been here before.' But I haven't been here before [this season]," McDowell said. "It's very exciting, to go out there and finally do it, I felt like a little kid."
Both of the touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter in obvious run situations. The first was a 3-yard jaunt. No. 2 was from 45 yards out.
"If you can establish the run that late in the game, get all those plays and yards, I think that takes a toll on the defense, running up and down the field, knowing they have to stop the run and they didn't," McDowell said. "If you can establish the run game, it really takes a toll on the defense."
McDowell is ready for more
