Clemson offers Tar Heel state DT

Sterling Johnson is a prospect on the rise. The 2015 Cleveland, N.C. defensive tackle spoke with about the latest with his recruitment.

Recently, Sterling Johnson has seen his recruitment gain momentum. "I have offers from Clemson and Florida," said the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Johnson. "They both offered me a few weeks ago.

"Penn State also emailed my coach and told me that they're seriously interested. I've also heard from ECU, Duke, N.C. State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Ohio State Maryland."

Johnson also mentioned a local school he hoped to hear from in the near future.

"My mom works at UNC, so hopefully they'll start recruiting me," Johnson said. "I grew up a Carolina fan and I would like to visit."

His first offer came from Clemson.

"Clemson was the first school to offer and it was really surprising because I expected my first offer to come from a smaller school," Johnson said. "I couldn't believe it, but I was happy."

He has visited the school.

"I visited there for their game against The Citadel," said Johnson, who has also visited East Carolina, Florida State and North Carolina State. "It was really nice, but I just wish I could have gone to a more competitive game."

Florida was the second school to offer.

"The Florida offer was really surprising because I hadn't really heard from them," Johnson said. "Then I was in weight lifting the other day and they called my coach and told him they wanted to offer me. It was exciting."

Besides the aforementioned trip to Chapel Hill, Johnson also mentioned possible visits to Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Virginia Tech during the offseason.

While he is in no rush to make any major decisions in regards to his recruitment, Johnson does have a tentative timetable for the process.

"I'm going to wait and see what offers come in during my junior year and then I'll probably make a verbal commitment right before my season starts or during the middle of my senior year." Top Stories
