Suspended for the opener

CLEMSON - Dabo Swinney announced on Tuesday afternoon that Corey Crawford, David Beasley, Garry Peters and Shaq Anthony are suspended for the Georgia game.

"I'm really disappointed to announce that we have four guys that are going to be suspended for the opener for a violation of team rules," Swinney said.

Crawford and Beasley, who played together at Carver High School in Columbus, Ga., are two-year starters.

In 2013, Crawford had 52 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in 569 snaps [12 starts]. Beasley started in seven games at left guard, recording 433 snaps.

Though Peters has been used primarily as a reserve cornerback, is in the mix for a starting job in 2014. As a junior, he had 22 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.

Anthony, a redshirt junior, is the only one of the four who isn't a senior. He started three games at right tackle in 2013, finishing the season with 503 snaps.

"A huge part of our program is teaching accountability, teaching responsibility and that there are consequences for your actions," Swinney said. "It's really that simple."

None of the four players were arrested.

"These are four really good young men, to be quite honest with you, four guys that I love and care about a whole lot, but they broke a team rule. It's just that simple," Swinney said. "As a result, they're going to miss a game, but I am very confident that all four of these guys will learn and grow from this, and go on to have a great 2014 season, both on and off the field."

Swinney would not confirm if the suspensions were connected.

"They just broke a team rule, not going to get into specifics about it," he said. "It really doesn't matter." Top Stories
