Not a bad precedent

Over the last few years, Dan Brooks has gotten a lot out of a former state champion wrestler. Grady Jarrett took home the Georgia heavyweight title as a senior.

Gage Cervenka, a junior at Emerald High School in Greenwood, has three state heavyweight titles to his name. He's also won a pair of national championships.

While visiting on Wednesday, he picked up an offer from Clemson, the team he grew up pulling for on Saturdays in the fall.

The Tiger coaching staff made absolutely sure that they got the message across.

"I walked in, coach Brooks and I were talking for a little bit. I ended up talking to Mike Reed, told me I had an offer when I got there," Cervenka said during an interview with CUTigers, as he rode home from Clemson.

"Kind of towards the end of watching practice, watched practice the whole time, seeing how things rolled. I talked to coach [Brent] Venables a little bit and he told me they offered, while they were practicing.

"At the end of it, after practice, coach [Dabo] Swinney came up to me and told me I had an offer, too. He asked me if I had any news yet, but I played it off so he could tell me, but he ended up telling me again."

The Clemson offer joins the likes of Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest.

"It feels pretty good," Cervenka said. "They told me that I definitely earned it, I was on their radar for a while and I just kind of proved that I deserved an offer. They said they made the decision to offer, so it definitely means a lot, because they're a top 10 team, so it was pretty neat."

Virginia Tech will host Cervenka for a visit this weekend. He'll return to Clemson the following weekend, which also happens to be the spring game and third junior day of the year.

"I'd definitely put Clemson at the top," he said. "If anything, I'd probably say N.C. State, then Duke and probably Wake Forest. Those are my offers."

When asked if any offers would contend with Clemson's, Cervenka said: "I mean, it'd be nice to get an SEC offer, but that's probably the only other thing I could think of, probably just an SEC offer."

As a junior, Cervenka had 100 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and three sacks. Top Stories
