Top QB Eyes Clemson

Outside of Michael Vick's little brother, there are only several top quarterback prospects that appear to be on the recruiting horizon at Clemson. This student-athlete hails from the Midwest, and he's got all of the big name schools you'd expect all over him- Miami, Michigan, Tennessee, and Notre Dame. Do the Tigers have a legitimate shot at this outstanding prospect? We've got the insight right here.

One of those is QB James Banks from Indiana.

We'd like to sum up James Banks, in one word, but its rather difficult. Maybe "dangerous" fits him best.

Banks (6-3, 205, 4.5) is another one of those scrambling quarterbacks, he also has blazing speed and a very strong arm. Many experts have compared him to former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin, in other words, he's got a great arm, a good head on his shoulders, and he's a proven winner. Personally, I would describe him as a taller version of Woody Dantzler. He seems to have the knack to spin out of tackles and take the football down field for long yardage.

James Banks is currently considered to be one of the top pure athletes in the Midwest. Last season he passed for almost 1800 yards and 20 touchdowns, and rushed for another 750. He guided Ben Davis High School to the 1999 Class 5A state championship, and he led them to a final ranking of No. 2 in the state a year ago his team finished 12-2.

Its been rumored that Notre Dame has been the favorite for Banks, but thats really not the case, "I really have no clear-cut leaders at this point," he said. "I'm still very interested in Clemson, Miami, Michigan, Purdue, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. (along with Notre Dame)"

Banks is planning on taking all of visits before making a commitment, but he hasn't ruled out the possibility of an early verbal.

Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming has Banks ranked among the nation's top talents.

"He's the best player in the state of Indiana," Lemming said. "I saw film on him as a sophomore, and he's just a terrific talent. He has a great arm, he can run, and he's smart as well. He's a natural.

He might be the best quarterback to come out of Indiana since Jeff George."

Those are pretty bold statements coming from Tom Lemming, so you feel like the kid must really be special.

Recruiting guru Max Emfinger also has Banks ranked as the #3 (athletic) quarterback in the country.

Reports suggest that Banks is seriously considering the Clemson Tigers, and even though he grew up a Notre Dame fan, I have a feeling Tommy Bowden will continue to recruit this kid hard, especially if he continues winning and putting up great stats for Ben Davis High School. The bottomline is the Tigers have as good a chance as any school in landing this blue chipper.

We will continue to monitor James Banks' progress this season, as will most of the strongest college football programs in the country.
