Committed Over: Clelin Ferrell committed to Clemson over LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Rated: Ferrell is a four-star prospect, No. 21 defensive end in the country and the 153rd-ranked player overall in the 2015 class.
Scouting Report: The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Ferrell is a long, explosive athlete. He is a versatile prospect, who can play with his hand down or in space.
Once the ball is snapped, Ferrell shows quick hands and does a nice job disengaging from his opponent. He also plays fast, but under control. Ferrell is relentless and takes good angles when pursuing the football.
Although he does many things well, there are some areas where he can improve. Like a lot of young defensive linemen, Ferrell can play too high at times, but that can easily be corrected.
The other area he could improve is overall strength. However, Ferrell has a great work ethic and has added nearly 15 pounds of muscle since the end of last season. Combine that with his large frame and fact that he will be in a college strength and conditioning program, and Ferrell could easily add another 30 to 40 pounds.
Recruiting Impact: Landing Ferrell is huge for couple of reasons.
First, it helps address a clear need – defensive end – for the Tigers. Clemson will lose three seniors to graduation next year and Ferrell should also be able to contribute early. He is the second defensive end to commit to Clemson in the 2015 class, joining LaSamuel Davis, and the Tigers will likely add at least one more at the position.
Next, Ferrell is one of the premier defensive ends in the country. Unlike a lot of defensive linemen his age, Ferrell plays both the run and pass well. He also has the all the measurables and a very high ceiling.
Final Thought: The Tigers had already landed several major prospects in this class, but the addition of Ferrell may be one biggest. Not only are they addressing a need with one of the top defensive lineman in the country, but Clemson is also getting a high-character kid who will represent them well on and off the field. Overall, I expect Ferrell to make an impact early in his colleg
