Argyle, Texas rising junior tight end J.C. Chalk is the first commitment to Clemson's 2016 class.

Chalk pulled the trigger on Wednesday afternoon before finishing his trip to Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

"My parents and I were talking to coach [Chad] Morris, coach [Danny] Pearman and coach Swinney leading up to camp," Chalk told CUTigers on Wednesday afternoon, "And we've been praying about it for a little bit.

"Clemson has always been my leader, I just haven't made it known yet. I just felt like it was time to get rid of all the other schools, eliminate all of the distractions and go ahead and commit."

At the time of his commitment, Arizona State, Colorado State and Duke had also offered.

"I just like how much it feels like a family," Chalk said of Clemson. "A lot of the other schools I've been to, it just feels different."

Plus, his grandfather, Gene Stallings, was Swinney's coach at Alabama. While that connection did play a part in his decision, Chalk said it wasn't the deciding factor.

"Even if there's no connection to him and my grandpa, just the kind of man that he is, it's really the main reason," Chalk said, "But it definitely helps that I've known him since third grade. That was the first time I met him.

"Just building a relationship with him, it's just been incredible."

Chalk is more than happy to be commitment No. 1 in Clemson's 2016 class.

"Since I'm the first one, I'll be able to help them recruit a lot of people. I'm really excited about that," he said. "I've got a couple of buddies out here in Texas, they're some big-time players and I would love to get them aboard and to come to Clemson.

"Also, I'm looking forward to being able to represent Clemson well in everything. I'm excited about it."

After playing on the defensive side of the ball for the first half of last season, Chalk was moved to tight end. He ended his sophomore year with 15 catches.
