McCloud is approaching a decision

Four-star Ray Ray McCloud was a relative unknown at this time last year. Now, he was one of the most sought after playmakers in the class of 2016.

Shortly after departing the 2013 Dabo Swinney Football Camp, McCloud picked up an offer from Clemson defensive backs coach Mike Reed. Arizona, UMass, Georgia Southern and Tennessee State were his only prior offers.

Now, his list of suitors includes Florida and Florida State, plus nearly every major program from every major conference in the country.

McCloud told CUTigers this week that he could be making a decision before the start of his senior season at Sickles High School in Tampa, Florida.

"If I feel right, this coming August, if I decide to commit, I'm not going to take any officials," he said.

In the meantime, he's focused on taking more unofficial trips. This summer, he's visited Clemson, UNC, Maryland, N.C. State and Wake Forest. Next week, he'll head west for trips to USC and UCLA.

And there could be others.

"I'm just still taking my visits to schools, seeing what's going on," McCloud said.

The 5-10, 170-pound four-star went into further detail about last week's trip to Clemson.

"It was fun just getting to see what they've got coming up, just seeing some peers from my area go through camp and getting to see coach [Jeff] Scott, watch him coach a little bit," McCloud said.

Clemson's staff took a more personal approach while he was on campus.

"Nothing really, because I talk to the coaches pretty often," McCloud said, when asked about any notable recruiting pitches from the Tiger staff.

He added, "It was just a building relationships [and] spending time with teach other kind of thing."

The relationship is strong very strong. That started with the foundation that Tony Elliott laid in the spring of 2012.

"I know how they feel about me and they know how I feel about the school and how I'm taking my recruiting process," McCloud said.

As a junior, he was responsible for 28 touchdowns. Top Stories
