Dabo on Deshaun Watson's status

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney confirmed Thursday freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss the upcoming Russell Athletic Bowl against Oklahoma.

“Deshaun Watson will undergo surgery Friday and will not play in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Oklahoma," Swinney said. "We made the decision to go ahead with surgery at this time after conversations with Deshaun, his family, doctors and athletic trainers. While we were all hopeful Deshaun could play without missing any further time preparing for the 2015 season, the three-week delay would have set us back so we will proceed now that his academic obligations are complete.

"We’re excited to play a great Oklahoma program, and I hope all our fans help us turn Orlando Solid Orange.”

Watson suffered an ACL tear during the week of practice before the Georgia State game. He also suffered a sprained LCL the week before in a loss at Georgia Tech.

Clemson will battle the Sooners on Dec. 29th at 5:30 PM.
