Tigers Making up Ground with Top LB

Linebacker Lawrence Timmons continues to look hard at some of the top programs outside the Palmetto state, but the in-state schools may be gaining ground. CUTigers.com caught up with the Florence prospect and we've got the latest on the intense battle for his services in this report.

Wilson High School
Florence, South Carolina

Timmons caught the eyes of many college coaches his junior season with an impressive 95 tackles on defense and 42 catches for 14 touchdowns as a receiver. The offer list stands at 10 for the Wilson High School defensive star, but that list will probably increase as Miami and North Carolina State are both showing significant interest. Timmons is not ready to go on record with a leader at this point.

The Tigers have made up some ground with the prize recruit over the past few weeks, as he no longer gives the Gamecocks the in-state advantage. "I haven't seen how Clemson is yet. I want to see how it is and what they have to offer."

Last time we talked with Timmons he mentioned that the Tigers were not recruiting him as hard as some of the other schools. "That has changed. They are starting to recruit me very hard." The star linebacker stated that Florida, Clemson, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee are recruiting him the hardest right now.

Are you looking for early playing time? "Well I know I'm going to have to work for it. That could make a difference."

What are you going to consider as you narrow your list and decide where you will play college football? "Depth will be one factor. How many go pro at my position. I will also look to see if they have a good coach for my position."

The timing for a commitment has also changed over the past few weeks. "I was thinking about waiting till signing day, but I may just take a couple of visits and do it during the season."

While Timmons may be leaning towards leaving the Palmetto state, his parents would like to see their son play. "They want to see me play. They would like me to stay closer to home."

Which schools will Timmons visit later this season? "I am thinking about giving a shot to the in-state schools. I'm definitely going to visit Florida, Tennessee, Maryland and maybe Michigan. I may use an unofficial visit to see the in-state schools."

Timmons recently camped at Miami. "It went pretty good. They said they were interested and would stay in contact with me."

We will continue to keep you updated on this outstanding linebacker from South Carolina, right up through signing day 2004.
