Clemson received great news on Saturday when former commit Rahshaun Smith picked the ACC Tigers over LSU and Auburn, re-committing to Clemson for, presumably, the final time.
Smith, arguably the best LB in the nation, picked Clemson after months of speculation about his recruitment. It basically came down to the long-standing relationships between Coach Brent Venables, Smith and his mother that stood the test of time.
In August, Smith de-committed after telling Coach Swinney he wanted to take other visits. This was all due to his relationship with his childhood mentor, Corey Robinson, who was then hired by the Maryland staff in a high school relations position. This put a lot of doubt in the air as far as the IMG star’s status.
We can tell you that from the outset of his recruitment since he de-committed, that Smith has been in constant contact with other Clemson commits in the 2016 class, via social media and text messaging. All the time, he was proclaiming that he would be back in the fold with Clemson.
We can also tell you that this is a very uncommon event--for a kid to de-commit and then go through the process and re-commit is extremely rare. It just goes to show you how good a recruiter Brent Venables really is.
The bottom line here is that the Clemson staff just secured one of the best LB’s, if not the best LB, in the nation this year. Smith has signed his Financial Aid Agreement and will enroll at Clemson next week, so you'll be able to follow his development with the Tigers defense throughout the spring here at CUTigers.com!
