****Recruiting Synopsis for Last Week
Well, we definitely have a theme coming out of last week's recruiting news, and that is the Tigers are making their presence known in the Lone Star State of Texas--with offers going out to two of the biggest prospects in the talent-rich state. A 2017 LB and 2018 TE both received offers from the Clemson staff last week, and the Tigers are in position to be a factor in each one of these recruitments moving forward.
This is yet another demonstration that the results of last year's successful ACC Championship and Playoff appearance have had a huge effect on the recruiting trail. The Tigers' national brand is reverberating well with prospects not just in the area and region, but also well beyond the southeast. Prospects from all over the map are making themselves more familiar with Clemson all the time. It never hurts to have a season like 2015 to point to as a “building block."--if you can call a #2 ranking and appearance in the National Championship game that--but that is really what this is, as Clemson's recruiting is reflecting that it's a reloading and not a rebuilding project every year now. That is when you have to start to realize the elite status the Tigers are now reaching with regard to prospects everywhere.
****New 2017 Safety Offer
Clemson reached into the Tar Heel State this week and offered star safety prospect Brelin Faison-Walden out of Grimsley High School in the Greensboro , NC area. He's a prospect that has seen his offer list expand to over 20 from ACC, SEC and even some Big Ten schools.
He made a recent trip to UGA over the weekend, and from what we are gathering, will be making an appearance in Clemson in the near future. This is another "late offer" (if you consider 10 months out late) in the defensive backfield for the 2017 class.
****New 5-Star 2017 LB Offer
The Tigers dipped into Texas for the second time in the past 7 days to relay an offer to 5-star LB prospect Baron Browning. See the linked story and Q&A we got from the big-time linebacker below. http://www.scout.com/college/clemson/story/1661844-tigers-offer-lone-sta...
Last time Clemson secured a linebacker out of the Lone Star State, you have to go way back to Tommy Bowden’s tenure as the Clemson Head Coach, when he signed John Leake. That worked out pretty well for the Tigers. Leake was an undersized heat-seeking missile that was a surprise commit back then and was a valued member of the defense while at Clemson, leading the team in tackles. Stay tuned, as we continue to monitor this late offer and the effects it could have on the 2017 class.
****New TE Offer out in Texas
Last week, the Tigers dropped their first offer in Texas since 2016 signee J.C. Chalk. It was extended to 2018 TE Mustapha Muhammad. The 4-star stud TE has seen his stock rise and the offers pour in from all over the Power Five conferences. Local Texas schools and surrounding Power Five schools that have historically recruited the same areas, have all lined up to offer the star.
Now you can add Clemson to that list. The Tigers need to find another TE in the next class to replace the loss of 2016 senior TE and Mackey Award Finalist Jordan Leggett and add to the stable of 4-star TE’s like Garret Williams and Milan Richard to go with the fellow Texas native and Clemson signee J.C. Chalk. Just stay tuned here at CUTigers, as we continue to monitor these long distance offers and follow the recruitment of this prospect out of Texas.
****Both 2017 Clemson QB’s on Campus Together
A couple of 2017 Clemson QB commits were back on campus for the annual Orange & White Game, and we got both prospects' thoughts on the 2017 class and how their visits went. With many players of the quality of these two, you would expect a natural rivalry to develop, but these two instead are bonding and becoming fast friends in addition to helping recruit the remaining targets on the Clemson big board for the 2017 class. If this class stays on track, it could easily be a top 10 or even a top 5 class when it's all said and done next February.
****Amari Rodgers to Have Surgery
2017 WR commit Amari Rodgers announced via twitter that he will undergo off-season shoulder surgery for a torn labrum he suffered during off-season 7-on-7 competitions and will miss the start of his 2016 senior season in Knoxville.
****2017 Spotlight Player of the Week
Fresh off a trip to Clemson, Blake Vinson--one of the Three committed offensive line prospects in the 2017 class--told us he had a great visit. "The game was awesome," he said. "I was really surprised with the crowd that came out, and really felt like I was apart of the Clemson Family. It was also great talking with all of the coaches.” We thought it would be a great time to break down Blake and what he brings to Clemson with his commitment.
The first thing you see out of the gate on film is the tenacity with which Blake plays the game. Finishing blocks and playing with good technique are his best attributes. Sometimes we see him play a little higher in his stance than one would want, but he makes up for that with his footwork and how well he gets to the second level of the defense and is able to get his hands on linebackers and safeties.
Look at current Clemson freshmen offensive lineman Sean Pollard, and you are looking at his carbon copy on the football field.
