The Tigers' staff has blazed a trail throughout the state of Texas, offering over half a dozen high-profile 4-and-5 star prospects over the past three weeks. Clemson’s affinity for the talent-rich state so far in the 2016 evaluation period is surely visible in the offers being given to Texas prospects here of late--the most recent one going out to 4-star 2018 safety Atanza Vongor out of Grand Prairie, TX.
Add in recent 5-star linebacker target Baron Browning and Missouri City, TX 4-star TE Mustapha Muhammad to go with big-time safety prospect Grant Delpit out of Houston. As you can see, the Tigers' interest in the state of Texas is more than just the occasional fly-by to court a national prospect. This year the staff seems to be making a concerted effort to expand west and map out a strategy. And there is quite a different approach and feel here, as this Spring’s reach into Texas is raising eyebrows--not only here at Clemson but with the local Power Five schools that have “mined” the recruiting riches of Texas for decades. Schools like Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M are all keeping an eye on Clemson’s efforts here and are very aware of a new threat encroaching on their territory.
Word has it that Clemson Defensive Backs Coach Mike Reed and Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables have been making the trek through the state during the May evaluation period, as the staff is all over the recruiting map and checking in on high school spring practices and prospects all over the states. The Clemson recruiting footprint has gone from regional power to now a threat on the national scene due to the exposure the program has received over the past 5 seasons of 10-plus-win seasons, to go along with bowl victories over LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma (twice) during that same period.
Stay tuned, as we keep in touch with our Texas Scout Analyst Gabe Brooks and see what he is hearing way down there on the plains of the Lone Star State.
****Logan Rudolph Commits to Clemson
Clemson received a surprise commitment from 2017 TE/DE/LB standout and local Rock Hill Northwestern High product Logan Rudolph, a 4-star stud. Clemson has put on the full court press after Logan since the offer was dropped shortly after Kyle Richardson, Rudolph's high school coach, was added to the staff. Much was said about the offer because Logan is a TE/DE prospect but was offered as a LB by the Tigers and Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables. Logan brings his tall frame and great technique to join a stellar 2017 class the Tigers are amassing . Again, the Clemson staff is addressing a serious need and at the same time taking an in-state prospect that they were really trying hard to get a commit from. Clemson held off not just the Gamecocks but a bevy of Power Five schools such as Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, FSU ,Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Penn State and many more! Stay tuned to CUTigers and the Radar Screen for all your 2017 breaking recruiting news.
Logan announced his commitment via twitter and caused quite a stir. See the twitter post linked below.
****Clemson Offers Another Peach State QB
Clemson is again after one of the state of Georgia’s top quarterbacks in 4-star 2018 QB Emory Jones. Clemson’s QB roster is already peppered with some of the best to come out of the Peach State over the past 5 years, including Deshaun Watson, who is arguably the best QB in college football after winning the Davey O’Brien Trophy last year. Watson will challenge for that honor this year, and is atop the early Heisman race for many. With this year class of recruits, add Zerrick Cooper, another Georgia QB, to that roster. Another Peach State QB, and there are also two Grayson High produckts in current 2017 commit Chase Brice and backup Nick Schuessler. All hail from across the border in neighboring Georgia! Of course, Clemson also plucked Charlie Whitehurst from the Peach State as well.
2018 seems no different, as the staff has their eyes set on Jones and his strong arm and solid frame. As you watch his film, you can see he needs a little work on mechanics and footwork, but the arm strength and natural athletic ability is all there. And let's not forget about the other 2018 QB offer the Tigers have in GA, Trevor Lawrence, also being heavily recruited by the staff.
Stay tuned, as we continue to track and monitor this big-time prospect here on CUTigers and the Radar Screen!
****2017 Spotlight Player of the Week LeAnthony Williams
Clemson picked up a commitment from LeAnthony Williams earlier this year, and with that commitment the Tigers got one of the premier cornerback prospects in the state of Georgia. With offers from all over the recruiting map, including his home state Georgia and a host of others like Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and many more, Williams is one of the most highly prized prospects not just in the south, but the entire nation.
The Tigers and recruiting coach of record Mike Reed were able to garner Williams's commitment with a need at the position, and the comfort of which LeAnthony felt with Coach Reed and the staff on his numerous trips to campus. Clemson just made the Peach State gridiron star comfortable and at home, and now Williams is out there on twitter doing his own recruiting for the Tigers. He's joined his fellow 2017 commitment partners Hunter Johnson, Chase Brice and Amari Rodgers as they traverse the twitter realm on a daily basis to promote the Tigers and recruit other prospects.
When you break down Williams’s game and what he will bring to Pickens County, you see a long, lanky and lean cornerback who covers ground fast and likes contact. On film, he likes to get physical at the line of scrimmage. Jamming receivers and knocking them off their routes seems to be his forte.' Add to that above average ball skills, and you have the formula for a top-notch cornerback prospect, and the Tigers staff could not be any happier with Williams and what he will bring to the defensive backfield upon his arrival in Clemson.
****New 2019 DT Offer out in Memphis, TN
Clemson goes into Memphis and drops another offer in the Volunteer State. This time it's to freshman phenom Trevis Hopper Trevis, a big-time defensive tackle prospect who is picking up a lot of steam on many Power Five schools' radars this spring. Also in the mix for Hopper are the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, FSU and home state Tennessee.
Stay tuned, as Hopper’s list will continue to expand and grow as he blows up this spring all across the national scene. We will continue to monitor his progress and how it relates to the Tigers here on the Radar Screen and on CUTigers.com.
