****What is in store for Clemson Recruiting in July
Well July is here later this week, and with it comes the heart of the summer and the heat and humidity the upstate of SC is famous for this time of year. While the Clemson campus remains pretty empty of students at this time, the football program welcomed the 2016 class of signees to campus last week. And with that, the summer conditioning workouts are in full swing. These newly arriving players are being acclimated to the Clemson work ethic and how hard Joey Batson and the strength and conditioning staff work this team during the off-season.
Also, the highlight of recruiting for the month of July will be the “All In Cookout,” a tradition Coach Swinney started about 5 years ago and has been emulated by other schools all over the college football map as they try to duplicate Clemson’s success and gleam the same results out of their own recruiting efforts.
The All In Cookout is usually attended by the highest of profile players in the current class, and usually a few of the next classes' highest viewed targets are also on hand to receive the Orange Carpet treatment. And almost on a yearly basis, the Cookout yields a Clemson commit like last year when Tre Lamar and his family announced his commitment at the Cookout.
This year is no different, as the Tigers have compiled a stellar list of attendees ready to come in and enjoy the cooking and the atmosphere of the lakes and mountains of Pickens County. It's hospitality….Tiger style. And we are hearing news of more than one player who may commit at the Cookout. So stay tuned, as we will release a list of attendees and keep you updated on all the action in July with Clemson's recruiting efforts. Keep it right here on CUTigers.com and the Radar Screen forum!

****Hunter Names a Top Group
2017 target and arguably the top “athlete” in the nation, Virginia native Devon Hunter has narrowed his list to 11 schools, and Clemson has made the cut. Devon is one of the most sought after recruits on the Eastern Seaboard and has had a who’s who of Power Five schools at his doorstep the past two seasons as he heads toward National Signing Day in 2017. In-state Virginia Tech is really pushing hard to try and keep the local prospect from crossing over the border and heading elsewhere. Hunter, who hails from the talent-rich Tidewater area of Virginia, has had his eyes on the upstate of SC as childhood favorite Clemson has risen to sit among a few others at the top of his offer list.
It’s no secret that Clemson Defensive mastermind has his sights set on Devon and bringing in the big-time hitter from Chesapeake to Clemson to further his football career in Death Valley.
Currently, it looks like the cream of the crop are all standing in line at present to try and land Devon for the upcoming class. Alabama, Auburn, VT, Florida, Tennessee, UNC as well as the Tigers of Clemson have major interest here. Hunter, in my opinion, is an over-sign-worthy prospect in the 2017 class because his combination of athleticism, ball skills and size are rare and hard to find. If you wanted a Clemson comparison, Devon reminds me of current Indianapolis Colt T.J. Green. Of course, Green came in as a WR and has just begun to develop the DB skills that Hunter possesses.
Stay tuned, as this one will go to the very end with Clemson right in the thick of it with Hunter!
****Carter Commits to Gators
After a long relationship and right off his visit to the campus with the Clemson staff for Dabo’s camp last week, Tampa, Florida DE prospect and high-valued target Zachary Carter committed to in-state Florida last week. The Tigers had thought they had Carter in their good graces as he exited Clemson last week. So much so, some other outlets that cover the Tigers had projected him as a likely Clemson commit. We held off on such a projection, as we saw the huge push coming from the Florida staff. As the weather has gotten warmer, so has the attention that Carter received from the Gators' staff and, specifically, former Clemson DE Coach Chris Rumph, who personally took over the recruitment of Carter after arriving in Gainesville. Signing Day is still a long way off, and anything can happen it is recruiting. But don’t look for the Tigers' staff to sit and wait on that to happen. They have really ramped up their interest in another target, DE Malik Herring from Mary Person’s High School out of Georgia.
****Tre Shaw Names a Top 4
Look for a commitment to come sooner rather than later here for Peach State star defensive back Tre Shaw. The other day, he listed Clemson, Auburn, South Carolina and UNC as his top four. We are hearing Shaw is trending heavily towards the Tigers of Pickens County, and we'll be following up on the intel we are receiving at present. But keep your eyes peeled, as the All In Cookout is set to happen in July, and Shaw should be back on campus with a decision to make after that stop.
There are more than a few DB’s left on the Tigers' Radar Screen here in 2017, and at this point with offers from the northeast to Florida and heavy SEC country Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and beyond, the word is out in 2017 that the Tigers want and need quality defensive backs to back-fill the roster that was hit hard with players leaving early for the NFL Draft.
****Markquese Bell Visits
4-star New Jersey athlete Markquese Bell made a midweek stop in Tiger Town on Wednesday and had a nice visit with the staff. He is an intriguing prospect who has come into the staff's sites recently, and they have to like his versatility. He has been invited to The Opening Finals as a WR (in fact, he will play on the same squad with Amari Rodgers, Tee Higgins and J.J. Robinson), but he would likely end up at LB or DB if he signs with the Tigers. Bell recently came out with a top 13, and Clemson is on his list. Stay tuned, as this prospect is gaining some traction!
Also last week, 3-star TN Safety Gentry Bonds narrowed his list to include the Tigers.
****The Opening Finals Rosters Released
The Opening Finals will be held in Oregon the weekend after next. The team rosters were released this past week, and they are littered with Clemson commits and prospects. Team Mach Speed includes QB commit Hunter Johnson, WR commit Amari Rodgers, WR prospect Tee Higgins, WR prospect James Robinson, ATH prospect Markquese Bell (he was traded from another squad after the photo composites were made) and safety prospect Grant Delpit. Some other notable Clemson targets participating are Devon Hunter, Drew Singleton, Xavier Thomas, Jamyest Williams, Malik Herring, Jordan Williams, Jamaree Salyer, Trey Smith, DeAngelo Gibbs, OrTre Smith and Owen Pappoe, Thomas and Pappoe are two of the six underclassmen who were honored with invitations. OL commit Matt Bockhorst was also invited, and you can bet that he will be doing some recruiting for Clemson along with Amari Rodgers and Hunter Johnson, so stay tuned!
