Weekly Clemson Recruiting Update

In his weekly Recruiting Radar, CUTigers Recruiting Analyst Gary McDaniel updates you on the latest news and intel on the Clemson recruiting front!

Well, here we are two weeks into the dog days of the stifling August heat and humidity, and the Clemson recruiting trail is still steaming from the recent commit of 4-star Virginian Jordan Williams to bolster an already stellar 2017 recruiting class. Well surprise, surprise, surprise!

The trail is still hotter than the asphalt on I-95 on a hot summer day on the way to the beach. We got intel just before I was to send this Radar in for publication that A.J. Terrell, 4-star DB and top Clemson DB target for 2017, made a huge announcement. See below, and get ready!

This could be good news for the Tigers from Pickens County, as AJ and Clemson’s defensive staff have really gotten to very comfortable with each other and where they stand in each other's eyes.  August looks to be a great month for the Tigers as they get ready for the 2016 season opener at Auburn coming up on September 3rd at Jordan-Haire Stadium.

In other areas, high school football is just starting to crank up with week one fast approaching all over the southeast, and we expect more than a few diamonds in the rough and unknowns to pop out of the next few weeks. With performances being documented all over the area and region, you can expect a few under-the-radar kids to shine in game situations, and that could expand the offer board for the upcoming class and for the ’18’s and ’19’s on the Clemson offer board. At about this time last year, we were the first ones anywhere to put the spotlight on guys like future 4-star OL Kavesz Sherard and 5-star DE Zacch Pickens from TL Hanna.

So keep up with our Friday Night Lights feature here on CUTigers.com throughout the fall for tons of breaking news and coverage like no other Clemson site anywhere. We are the only site that will go out there and report on the games with video, photos and coverage along with interviews and a whole lot more as we bring you recruiting news from ground zero so you will know about future Tigers before anyone else!

****Terrell to Commit on 8/19

4-Star DB AJ Terrell

ATLANTA, GA - As we notified you on the Radar Screen forum, late Sunday afternoon AJ Terrell changed his commitment date from his initial announced date of September 23rd to this upcoming Friday August the 19th. As of today, it’s down to Clemson, Florida and South Carolina according to our sources and intel on his recruitment.

AJ has been leaning towards Clemson a lot as of late, and the Tigers feel real good about their chances if this were to happen today. Five days from now, we think the Tigers have the same feeling in their guts they have had since impressing the 4-star Peach State DB and his family on visits over the spring and as late as the All In Cookout, where we heard AJ really bonded with a lot of the current Clemson roster on the defensive side of the ball.

AJ has been a major target--arguably the #1 defensive back on the big board for the Tigers and his recruiting coach of record, Mike Reed. Clemson lost a lot in the defensive backfield to the NFL Draft last year, as underclassmen TJ Green, Mackenzie Alexander and Jayron Kearse all declared and were drafted, leaving a huge void there for the ’17 class to fill.  With 4-star lifetime friend LeAnthony Williams from Roswell already committed to the Tigers and in his ear to join him, it has only helped Clemson's chances with Terrell.

Stay tuned, as we will reach out to our sources and prepare you for the announcement later this week giving you our own projection as Friday approaches!

****Catching up with Cordarrian

We caught up with 4-star 2017 Clemson RB commit Cordarrian Richardson and had a chance to ask him how the summer has been and what he’s been hearing in regards to Clemson and the 2017 recruiting class.

Richardson is arguably the best RB prospect on the East Coast and possibly the country. He has a rare blend of size, power and speed, and he will remind old school Clemson fans of Kenny Flowers and Raymond Presider. The latter I think is a more honest comparison, as Flowers was a rare one with his 4.4 speed on that huge frame.

As the lone running back prospect in the 2017 class and joining a roster full of 4-star and 5-star backs, Richardson has indicated that he has no problem competing for that spot in the rotation for Co-Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs Coach Tony Elliot.

Cordarrian is a big part of Clemson's" Tennessee Takeover," as the staff has gotten three-quarters of the big-time players they targeted in the Volunteer State to commit to the Tigers in 2017 in Tee HigginsAmari Rodgers and Richardson. The Tigers also managed to swing the one-time Tennessee commit and 4-star QB Hunter Johnson to their class. Clemson's #1 OL Trey Smith is the lone Tennessee target yet to pledge to the Tigers, and as of this writing Clemson is neck-and-neck with the in-state Vols for Smith's commitment and a 4-for-4 sweep of the state!

Here is the latest from Cordarrian:

CUTigers:  It's been a while since we last spoke, Cordarrian. How did you spend your summer this year?

CR:  "My summer was pretty special, knowing I was in summer school so I could enroll at Clemson early. Practice is going fine. We are working on trying to win another State Championship."

CUTigers:  When do you think you're going to get back to Clemson for a visit?

CR:  “Whenever I get a free chance, I plan on visiting. Most likely taking my official with the bro's (Amari and Tee) and see a couple of the 'big fellas' that'll be blocking for me."

CUTigers:  Who from the staff has been keeping in  touch with you since your last visit to Tiger Town?

CR:   "The whole coaching staff has been reaching out to me. We have a good connection with one another."

CUTigers:  What was the best thing you did all summer?

CR:  "The best thing I did this summer was finish summer school."

CUTigers:  What is your goal this being your final season at the high school level?

CR:  "Well I look forward to going out with a bang. Doing whatever I have to do to get my team back on top. And break even more state records."

4-Star defensive standout Stephone Wynn, Jr. now has two dozen offers

As we do at this time of the year, CUTigers goes under the “Friday Night Lights” all over the region and covers high school football like no other Clemson site anywhere to provide you with the best coverage of local, regional and some national prospects from all over the SC, GA and NC region.

Belton-Honea Path QB Kameron Burton could be the most underrated QB in the state of SC this season

We returned to the Anderson County Football Jamboree in Anderson, SC for the second consecutive season--this time hosted by Palmetto High School. Along with host school Palmetto, Crescent HS, Pendleton HS, Wren HS, Westside HS, TL Hanna and Powdersville all competed on a hot, muggy Friday night.

Last season, CUTigers attended this event and we found no less than three unknown but now big-time targets when we stumbled across TL Hanna’s trio of Zacch PickensKavesz Sherard and Stephon Wynn. All three went from relative unknowns with zero offers to high 4- star caliber players in each player's class! And each one now holds double-digit offers from Power Five teams all over the national recruiting map. Wynn is ranked by one service as the #30 overall player in the 2018 class. Wynn is also a Clemson legacy, as his father played for the Tigers. Pickens and Sherard also blew up and attained vaunted 4-star status from zero recognition prior to CUTigers reporting on this trio several times last year.

Along with the trio from Hanna, Wren HS quarterback Jay Urich, a South Carolina 2017 commit, was there along with Westside HS cornerback Lummie Young, a Duke 2017 commit, and Kameron Burton of Belton Honea Path--a QB with several D2 offers and a lot of D1 interest. Westside High's Jackson Williamson, a Miami of Ohio Commit was also there. The Southpaw has a tremendous arm and is very quick on his feet.
