Injury Update on Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow

Star Clemson WR Hunter Renfrow has caught a touchdown pass in 4 consecutive games, including two in the National Championship Game against Alabama.

Hunter Renfrow injured his thumb upon landing after his sensational touchdown catch on Saturday.  I asked Dabo about Renfrow on his teleconference Sunday night, and he told me he expected Hunter to practice today. However, Dabo said on his Tiger Calls radio show tonight that an MRI today revealed that Renfrow has a break in his thumb, and he will be out approximately 4-6 weeks. The staff is hopeful he will be able to play in the big showdown with FSU in Tallahassee at the end of October. We will keep you updated on this breaking story as more information comes in this week!

Clemson, S.C.—Clemson starting wide receiver Hunter Renfrow will miss “a few weeks,” according to Head Coach Dabo Swinney. Renfrow suffered a broken hand in the Tigers win over Troy on Saturday while making a 35-yard touchdown reception.

Preliminary reports on Saturday indicated it was not a serious injury.

“We thought Hunter was going to be fine, but the MRI on Monday showed a little crack below his thumb,” said Swinney on his Monday night radio show, Tiger Calls. “He could play with it, but the injury would make it more difficult to hold on to the ball when he tried to tuck it away. He will have surgery to repair it and miss a few weeks. We hope to have him back for the NC State game, but certainly by the Florida State game after the open date.”

Renfrow was one of Clemson’s top players in the school’s run to the National Championship game last year. He had 33 receptions for 492 yards and five touchdowns in 2015. The original walk-on had seven receptions for 88 yards and two scores against Alabama. He has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of the last four games. He has four receptions for 62 yards and two scores in two games so far this year.

Ray Ray McCloud is expected to move into the starting lineup with Renfrow’s injury. McCloud is coming off a game in which he had seven receptions for a career high 86 yards. Top Stories
