Weekly Clemson Recruiting Update

In our weekly Recruiting Radar, CUTigers Recruiting Analyst Gary McDaniel updates you on the latest news and intel on the Clemson recruiting front!

With the Clemson National Championship Parade and Celebration along with big commit official visit weekend over and in the books, the Clemson staff now truly turns its eyes and efforts toward recruiting and getting things all lined up for next weekend’s “Junior Days” event in Clemson that is truly destined to be an epic list of 2018 talent on hand.

Also, in conjunction with the opening of the new Football Operations Center--the ribbon cutting is not until National Signing Day, but the staff will be moving in this weekend--some fireworks could be expected this weekend in terms of a commitment or two. So be sure to stay tuned here to the Radar and for a complete list of the expected visitors for the big weekend in Title Town.

The staff is also still trying to pin down that last spot on the 2017 class, and we can tell you that the safety position is no longer in consideration for that lone spot on the list. With the announcement of Wayne Gallman to the NFL, Tyshon Dye to transfer and the de-commitment of Cordarrian Richardson, the running back spot is where the focus will be as we wind down this class.

Also, Darrian Felix surprised the Clemson staff and a lot of folks with his Oregon commitment and resulting cancellation of his Clemson visit.  Oregon did not want Felix to visit Clemson and let him know as much when accepting his commitment.  But that leaves 2017 running backs out of Louisiana and Florida on the table--the Tigers are still courting Travis Etienne from the Bayou and Devan Barrett from the Tampa area. Another reason to keep your eyes pinned here to the Radar Screen and The Valley forums in the next few days.

Clemson QB Commit Chase Brice

The 2017 commits were on hand in force this past Saturday for the Clemson National Championship Parade and Celebration, as it coincided with the Tigers' annual official visit weekend for all committed prospects. The 2017 class got to take in the festivities in grand style with prime seats near the podium and in the midst of Clemson VIP’s and football greats from all over.

It was another huge feather in the recruiting cap for the Tigers, as these experiences were tweeted all over the recruiting nation from the commits in attendance, and it only bodes well for the Tigers to show the future classes what their goals are and that if you believe you can attain those goals and reap the reward. That was literally on display Saturday inside Memorial Stadium.

****2017 RB Gets In-Home Visit from Dabo

Travis Etienne (Photo by Chad Simmons)

Clemson has shown serious interest in Louisiana native and former Texas A&M Running Back commit Travis Etienne, a prospect who has gained a lot of traction nationally since his de-commitment from the Aggies. Tennessee and in-state LSU are also in hot pursuit, and now the 2016 National Champs have thrown their hat into the mix in trying to secure an official visit to Clemson for Travis and see for himself what the Tigers have to offer the 2017 RB.

He is such a highly valued target that on the first day his schedule allowed, Coach Dabo Swinney himself made the trip to Louisiana to make his in-home visit prior to the young man’s official. It's a rarity in recruiting and shows the priority they are making this young man’s recruitment. Stay tuned, as we have reached out to Travis about the visit and what he heard from Coach Swinney, and we will report on this in the next week as we await his potential visit this weekend--a visit we do see taking place at this point. Inside sources have confirmed to us that it is indeed the plan.

****New OL Offer

Warren McClendon, 2019 OL, Brunswick (Ga.)

The Tigers reached out to the Peach State and offered Brunswick, GA offensive tackle Warren McClendon, a 6’5, 280-pound behemoth out of South Georgia. The staff is looking to add to the stellar 2017 OL class and keep up that momentum moving forward and into the 2018 class. Stay tuned, as we track McClendon’s recruitment moving forward and determine if he will be a part of the big Junior Days visitors list expected here in Title Town next weekend.

****New 2018 TE Offer

We just learned this evening that 2018 big-time TE James Mitchell out of VA is the latest to receive an offer from National Champion Clemson. Mitchell had this to say about the offer:

"Coach Streeter told my head coach, then he told me. It means a lot. I've had a lot of interest in them from the start, so to finally get the offer is big. I'm heading up there for Junior Day on January 28th."

****New LB Offer

The Clemson staff reached into Broward County and the fertile recruiting grounds of Ft. Lauderdale to offer 2019 LB Anthony Solomon out of powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Stay tuned, as we continue to track his recruitment!
