THE GAME: The 14th-ranked Wolfpack will be shooting to start 1-0 in ACC play for the second-consecutive year when they travel to Winston-Salem to face the Demon Deacons in the 97th meeting between these two long-time rivals ... NC State has won the last three meetings and leads the ACC's third most-played rivalry 59-31-6 ... the last time Wake Forest downed NC State at home was in 1999 when the 25th-ranked Deacs defeated the Pack 35-7.

LAST YEAR: Philip Rivers threw for 233 yards and T.A. McLendon rushed for two touchdowns to lead NC State to a 32-13 win in the ACC opener for both teams.

THE COACHES: NC State's Chuck Amato is 27-12 in his fourth season as a head coach ... Jim Grobe is 14-11 in his third season at Wake Forest and 47-44-1 in his nine years overall.

THE GAME: The 15th-ranked Cavaliers will travel to the South Carolina capital to face the Gamecocks in a 12:30 PM game to be aired on Jefferson-Pilot ... the two schools will face each other one year after Virginia defeated 22nd-ranked South Carolina 34-21 ... the Gamecocks have won seven of the last 10 meetings and lead the series 19-13-1 which reflects South Carolina's forfeit of a 17-7 win in 1965 for using an ineligible player.

LAST YEAR: Virginia capitalized on seven turnovers to capture its first victory of the season over No. 22 South Carolina ... Matt Schaub threw for 170 yards on 20 for 30 passing. THE COACHES: Al Groh is 41-52 in his ninth season, including a 15-12 mark in his third year at Virginia ... Lou Holtz has accumulated a 239-120-7 record as a head coach in 32 seasons, including a 23-25 mark as the five year head coach of the Gamecocks.

THE GAME: North Carolina looks to bounce back from its season-opening loss to No. 12 Florida State when it hosts Big East foe Syracuse ... this is the fourth meeting between the schools with the Tar Heels leading the series 2-1 after a 30-22 victory in the Carrier Dome a year ago ... the two teams first met in a home-and-home series in 1995 and 1996 with both teams winning on the road ... the match-up in Kenan Stadium will be the season-opener for the Orangemen.

LAST YEAR: Tar Heel QB Darian Durant threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to give North Carolina a 30-22 come-from-behind victory ... Dan Orner kicked field goals of 51, 52 and a school-record 55 yards and tied an NCAA single-game record with three field goals of 50 yards or longer.

THE COACHES: John Bunting is 11-15 in his third season at North Carolina and 49-29-2 in eight years overall ... Paul Pasqualoni has a 16-year head coaching record of 125-56-1 record, including a 91-39-1 record in 12 seasons at Syracuse.

LAST MEETING: The fifth-ranked Tigers posted a come-from-behind 20-10 victory on October 17, 1987.

THE COACHES: Chan Gailey is 7-7 in his second season at Georgia Tech and 31-18 in five seasons overall ... Tommy Tuberville is 30-20 in five years at Auburn and 55-40 in nine seasons as a head coach.

Saturday's game marks the third meeting between the Blue Devils and Catamounts ... all three previous contests have been won by Duke and all have been played in Durham with the last meeting resulting in a 24-10 win for the Blue Devils back in 1998 ... this will be the second-consecutive ACC opponent for Western Carolina who is coming off a 59-20 loss against NC State last Saturday in Raleigh.

LAST MEETING: In the 1998 season-opener, Duke posted a 24-10 victory over Western Carolina to earn its first opening-game win since 1994. THE COACHES: Carl Franks is 5-41 in five seasons as Duke's head coach ... Western Carolina's Kent Briggs is 5-7 in his second year as a head coach.
