Weekly Clemson Recruiting Update

In our weekly Recruiting Radar, CUTigers Recruiting Analyst Gary McDaniel updates you on the latest news and intel on the Clemson recruiting front!

Clemson just held its second Junior Day in as many months, and the result was a stellar roster of 2018 Juniors in town and add to that 2019 and 2020 priority targets this staff has earmarked for extra attention. It was a Junior Day that raised eye brows all across the Clemson recruiting landscape. We reported last week at least 60 recruits attended the event along with their parents and high school coaches. And during the day they were treated to a tour of the new Football Operations Center to see and experience all the amenities that are available for the players, and also to attend spring practice as the staff was putting the 2017 Tigers through another spring workout. This day allowed these visitors to see first hand how this staff works and how players' practice habits shape up on the fields of Jervey Meadows.

A new 2018 WR offer was also dispersed at the event, as the staff offered in-state product and Gaffney High star wide receiver Dennis Smith on the day.  Also during the day, offers went out to 2019 RB Quavaris Crouch out of North Carolina and Washington, DC linebacker Shane Lee.  Add to that offers earlier in the week to Jalen Catalon, a 2019 safety out of Texas and Darnell Jefferies, a defensive tackle out of Georgia that has seen his stock rise significantly in the recent days and weeks.

With the staff also able to again bring in the IMG gang for a visit. as they tripped throughout the southeast on a whirlwind tour of several schools that included Clemson, South Carolina, UGA and UVA. The staff was again able to get the #1 defensive target on the 2018 board, DE Xavier Thomas, back on campus with 2018 linebacker commit Mike Jones Jr. in tow, along with highly sought-after defensive tackle Taron Vincent and a new visitor. Maybe the most intriguing recruit in years is Daniel Faalele, a mammoth young man from Australia that has never played a down of football but who oozes athleticism and size you cannot coach at any level. Folks, he is 6'8 and 400 pounds in HIGH SCHOOL, and that's and athletic 400 pounds. He has NFL offensive tackle written all over him, and consequently many schools like Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan and Miami have offered just purely on promise and the abilities he has already shown in camps. Scout has already rated him a 3-star prospect despite having yet to play a down.

The tweet below will give you an idea of his athleticism and the wow factor.

****Big-Time 2020 NC WR Talks Clemson Visit

Clemson is, as we all know, considered WRU by all of college football and the NFL, as it has been a literal production line of NFL-ready wide receivers draft after draft, with many Clemson products like Nuk Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Jaron Brown, Adam Humphries, Charone Peake and Martavis Bryant all sitting on NFL rosters, and with Clemson’s Mike Willams and Artavis Scott set to join their ranks this year.

As you can expect, Clemson offers to wide receivers are very selective, and they are honing in on the 2019 and 2020 classes and building their “big board” at the position, as they trek through the May evaluation period and summer camps all coming up soon.

And one of the names Clemson already has on the top of the board for 2020 is North Carolina product Porter Rooks out of the metro Charlotte, NC area.  He's a player that has offers from a bevy of ACC schools and interest from all the big names of the Power Five conferences.  We had to the chance to speak to Porter on his way home from the latest Junior Day event on campus at Clemson, and this is what Porter had to say about the visit:

"I just left Clemson. I had a great time. Coach Scott and Coach Pearman were by my side most of the day, and they told me a lot of great things regarding my recruitment at Clemson. The facilities are second to none. I had a great time and look forward to getting in closer contact. Coach Scott was talking about me coming back in the spring and summer.  I have the offers from Wake, Louisville, UNC and ECU. I've been hearing the most from Alabama, Penn State, FSU, Southern Cal, Clemson and Florida."

****2019 Virginia LB Talks Clemson Junior Day Visit

Clemson invited this 2019 linebacker from Virginia to attend Junior Dat and bring his family along to introduce the Clemson campus and staff to them on this occasion. We caught up with Brandon on his way out of town, and he had the following to say regarding his day in Clemson.

"It was a great experience all around for me and my family. I had a chance to meet and talk to most of the defensive coaches. I spent a lot of time talking with Coach Streeter and Coach Venables. They really like my size and speed for my age. How I play aggressive and play sideline to sideline. I hope to be back for the spring game and will be back for camp in June."

****New Offer to 2019 NC RB

The Tigers offer 2019 RB Quavarius Crouch on his recent visit to the Clemson campus over the weekend. Crouch, who already holds offer from UGA, Nebraska, Michigan, UNC, Tennessee, VT and Wake Forest, can now add the National Champions to his list of suitors. Stay tuned, as the recruitment is heating up for this Tar Heel State standout.

****New 2018 DT Offer in Georgia

The National Champions reach into the Peach State and extend an offer to fast-rising prospect Darnell Jefferies, a player who is moving up big boards in recruiting war rooms all over the ACC and SEC, already citing offers from in-state UGA and GT to go with Louisville, Notre Dame, VT, Tennessee and Wake Forest. Now add the Tigers of Clemson to this young man's choices for his services in February of 2018.

****New In-State 2018 WR Offer

WRU extended an offer to in-state star and Gaffney High School wide receiver Dennis Smith, a highly coveted player in many ACC and SEC coaching staff’s eyes. Smith, who hold offers from South Carolina, Northwestern, ECU, now adds Clemson to the list. He is another player that is about to explode in the near future following a camp stop or two in the early summer months.  Stay tuned here, as local WR offers are very rare at Clemson, and we will monitor this one moving forward right here on CUTigers.com!

****New DB Offer in Lone Star State

Texas defensive back offers have started to become a theme recently for the Clemson staff. We are inclined to think Clemson DB coach Mike Reed may have secured a second residence in the state with the amount of road work and offers being extended in the state. Joking of course, but the staff has really put a lot of time and travel and research into this state and its available talent.

And this week, yet another Texas prep prospect has a Clemson offer on the table, in 2019 star Jalen Catalon, a player who has already stated that Clemson has moved to the top of the pack of his current recruiting pecking order. It's an offer list that includes Oklahoma, Missouri, SMU and now has the Defending National Champions placing their seat at the table.

In-state powers Texas and Texas A&M have yet to offer, and we feel, as with any Texas kid, that could factor in here. Also, remember that LSU likes to mine this state for the same type of talent, and we could see them stepping up with an offer too. This is another player to stay up on for the 2019 recruiting class, and you can do that right here!

****New Offer to 2018 Maryland DB

Clemson has extended an offer to 2018 safety prospect and mid-atlantic resident Noah Boykin of Woodson High School in Washington, DC. He has offers from ACC, SEC and Big Ten schools from all over the map that includes Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, UNC, Pitt, Tennessee, VT, West Virginia, Syracuse and many more. As the Clemson staff has very limited 2018 spots, we see this offer as quite significant and one to keep your eyes on moving forward.
