In a HUGE surprise today, Xavier Thomas has given his pledge to Dabo Swinney and the Defending National Champion Clemson Tigers. We had heard inklings that this may come to fruition this week. Lo and behold, the Tigers nab the nation's #1 DE from IMG. The South Carolina native is now playing alongside Clemson LB commit Mike Jones, Jr.
Thomas, who is ranked #6 overall in the Scout 300 and as high as #1 overall by some, joins QB Trevor Lawrence, DT Josh Belk, LB Jake Venables, IMG teammate LB Mike Jones, Jr., WR Derion Kendrick and DE Justin Mascoll to round out the class of 2018 so far.
Thomas picked the Tigers over offers from virtually every school, including in-state and longtime favorite South Carolina. The word out of the Thomas camp is that South Carolina’s season and the results of the spring game had a lot to do with the big-time DE’s decision to end his recruitment and throw in with the Tigers of Clemson. It's been long known that Thomas wanted to join a team with potential. Clemson has the momentum in that department, with a National Title, six straight consecutive double-digit win seasons and back-to-back ACC Championships.
Thomas will be in Death Valley for today's Orange & White Game, and we are efforting a comment from him, so stay tuned!
