JackSmack: Issue #16

As difficult as it is to dive back into writing about sports with everything going on, I need the normalcy it brings and I think a lot of people do, too. Just being able to watch a baseball game instead of CNN brings me up for a little while. So for all the Tiger fans, here goes.

First off, it's gotta be Clemson Football. 2-0 with Virginia coming to Death Valley this weekend. I think we win and I think we cover (-10) as well. I get scared if the Cavs can run the ball on us like Wofford did in the first half. Gosh, that was embarrassing.

An interesting note about Fresno State (who I picked last week): they enter the coaches poll at 15 and in the AP at 11 with one first place vote. Who on this planet is voting them number one?

I like Lou Holtz and I'll root for the Gamecocks as long as they don't beat us. I hate Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi State, etc. They can play and Derek Watson's a stud, but we can take them.

I have 3 picks of the week in college:

I like Auburn (+2) at Syracuse, Maryland (-7) at Wake Forest, and UCLA (-6 ½) at home versus Ohio State.

On to the NFL. Who surprised me two weeks ago? Cincinnatti, Carolina, San Diego, and Miami. Who disappointed me last week? Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Washington, Tennessee, and Tampa Bay.

Some of the marquee games this weekend: (*--who I'd take)

Minnesota* (-3) at Chicago (A visit to Soldier Field is just what the Vikes Dr. ordered)

Tennessee at Jacksonville* (-2) (Will the mighty Titans fall to 0-2?)

Oakland* at Miami (-1 ½) (Best game of the week)

N.Y. Giants at Kansas City* (-1 ½) (2nd best game of the week.)

I got 3 picks for this week:

I love Denver on Sunday night at (-8 ½) to rout Arizona, I like the Jets giving up only (-1 ½) in New England, and I like the Colts (-10) at home versus the Bills.

Here's my week one Top Ten: (This is a week to week thing and not who I believe are the best teams in the game, but after one week.)

1. Denver
2. Indianapolis
3. St. Louis
4. New Orleans
5. Philadelphia
6. Miami
7. Green Bay
8. N.Y. Giants
9. Jacksonville
10. Carolina

Some college hoop notes: For the Clemson Tigers, Junior Point Guard Edward Scott was named captain for the 2001-02 season. And if you didn't hear about Teddy Dupay (you know I hate to talk bad about a Gator, but) he is suspended for the year for gambling.

Dick Vitale released an early preseason top 25. For the ACC, we've got 5 in:

1. Duke
2. Maryland
12. Virginia
19. UNC
20. Wake Forest
(Florida was 6th by the way.)

A little baseball now. How about Roger Clemens? 20-1 at 38 years old. The 1st pitcher at any age to go 20-1. The AL playoffs are set. Oakland and the Yanks will play a rematch of last year's thriller and Seattle will have to get by Cleveland this year. The NL is still up for grabs, especially with Scott Rolen carrying the Phils to within a ½ game of the Braves. I'm rooting for Barry, of course. By the way, former Tiger Matt LeCroy hit a homerun last week for the Twins.

Anyway, enjoy a weekend of football and pray for those who need it.
