Weekly Clemson Recruiting Update

In our weekly Recruiting Radar, CUTigers Recruiting Analyst Gary McDaniel updates you on the latest news and intel on the Clemson recruiting front!

****EPT Elite Skills Camp 2017

CUTigers took the trip down I-26 and into the metro Columbia area to take in the 3rd Annual Elite Position Training Skills Camp for 2017. In attendance were some of the best of the Palmetto State recruits and prospects for 2018, 2019 and 2020.  There were also some Clemson commits and prospects, as 2018 DL commit Josh Belk showed up on site and was there to hang out and support his fellow prospects. Josh took the time to speak with us about the 2018 class, what he has been hearing from the staff and what he see’s in his future at Clemson.

2018 Clemson Legacy DL Prospect Stephon Wynn, Jr. of IMG Academy In Bradenton, FL

The camp was loaded with DL talent, as the top three names in the state for quite some time at this position group were in attendance. Belk, who did not work out, was joined by Stephon Wynn Stephon (2108) and Zacch Pickens (2019) to go with a bevy of in-state talent vying to be seen by the staff on hand training these kids and also by a host of onlookers, including all the major recruiting networks and sports media from all over the state and region.

In the skills department, it was the QB’s, and specifically Dakereon Joyner, that was top in the class for the day. Joyner, who had a less than stellar camp at Nike's The Opening, was able to showcase his skill set here for all to see.  He's a quick-twitch QB with the skills to step into a system that can compliment what he does now at Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston. Clemson fans may be seeing a lot of Joyner in years to come, as he's being heavily recruited by NC State and In-state South Carolina.  So it was a good thing when South Carolina Head Coach Will Muschamp stopped in to watch the QB’s, primarily his son (who was also competing), and got to see his 2018 prospect at the position in live action.

There were lots of Clemson connections all over the place, as the EPT training staff was loaded with Clemson alums and ex-NFL talent like DL Coach Rashaad Jackson and LB’s Coach Anthony Waters, both Clemson alums with NFL pedigree.

When all is said and done, this camp is now in its third year and has been a blessing to the Palmetto State and its exposure level for FBS recruits and players that, due to rural home towns and lesser known programs, would otherwise not be exposed to the assemblage of analysts and coaches they saw at this year's event.

****2018 Commit Josh Belk Interview

Over the weekend, we had the chance to talk with 2018 Clemson commit Josh Belk out of Lewisville, SC.  The 4-star DT was not participating in drills due to rehab of a shoulder injury from the 2016 season, so Josh had the time to stop by and give us his thoughts on the 2018 Clemson recruiting class.

If you have not seen Josh live, you should look at his HUDL film below and familiarize yourself with him.  He reminds me a lot of the former Tiger beside him in the photo above, Rashaad Jackson (Greer HS D-Line Coach), who coached the DL for the EPT camp.  Like Jackson, Belk is a run-stuffer who takes up space in the middle and allows the rest of the defense to take advantage of the mismatch he creates on the inside.  Belk is a high-motor kid with a ton of strength. Look for him to really blow up in a year under the Batson strength and conditioning program at Clemson.

Enjoy our quick interview with Josh, and stay tuned as we follow him throughout his 2017 season and into National Signing Day 2018!

****Clemson Makes Top Group for NC D-Line Prospect

http://www.scout.com/player/209906-alim-mcneill

As expected, Clemson has made the final list for top Tar Heel State DL prospect Alim McNeill. Stay tuned, as we continue to track Alim and his recruitment. We expect him to visit the staff this summer for either the Dabo Swinney Camp in June or the All In Cookout in July.  As it stands, it's an ACC vs SEC fight for the big man out of the "other Carolina."

The inside skinny on this recruitment is that it's looking like it will go down to post-summer and a few more trips for McNiell.  Since his last visit to Clemson, the offer list has expanded, and he has made it known that he wants to get out and see a few more schools before getting down to his final decision. So stay here at CUTigers.com for all the latest with McNeil and the Tigers on the Recruiting Radar each and every week!

****New OL Offer in Ocala, FL

http://www.scout.com/player/217357-michael-tarquin?s=398

Clemson revisits the Sunshine State and offers 2019 OT Michael Tarquin out of the Ocala area just north of Tampa. It's the latest of the OL offers to go out in the last week of the May evaluation period, which comes to an end this week. The Tigers' staff actually shut it down last week, and the staff is no longer on the road.

****Another New OL Offer in Tampa

Corey Bender

http://www.scout.com/player/203710-nick-petit-frere

Clemson offered another OL out of the Tampa area in the same week as Tarquin. This one went to 4-star OT Nick Petit-Frere, who is anything but petite at 6'6, 258 pounds. This offer could have serious legs on it so we will continue to track this one moving forward. The National Champs are finding the appeal of the trophy and brand have been noticed, especially in the Tampa area, where Clemson has in the past mined for recruits like current Tigers Deon Cain and Ray Ray McCloud as well as recent graduate and NFL free agent Artavis Scott.

So keep Petit-Frere on your radar moving forward, as we will be tracking this one!

HUDL HIGHLIGHTS:

****New DL Offer

http://www.scout.com/player/207853-nolan-smith

Clemson surprised 4-star DE Prospect Nolan Smith with a recent offer. The UGA commit from Savannah has been enrolled at the IMG academy in Florida and notes that many of his teammates, including current 2018 commit and arguably #1 DE in the nation Xavier Thomas, all cite Clemson as a destination school.

And all the talk has reverberated with the 2019 stud.  So much so that Smith, who committed to UGA very early in the process, is starting to reconsider his commitment and is contemplating a few visits this summer, perhaps even competing at a camp or two. Clemson and Florida State are now in the mix along with his home-state Bulldogs from Athens. Stay tuned, as this one is gonna take a turn, and we think the Tigers are going to be right in the thick of things from what we have gleaned out of the Sunshine State.

We had the chance to speak with Nolan, who shared his thoughts on the offer and what Clemson brings to the table.

CU:  What Coach from the Clemson staff are you hearing from the most?

NS:  “I’m hearing from Coach Brent Venables.”

CU:  What does the Clemson offer mean and represent to you?

NS:  "The offer means a lot for me and that they won a national championship says a lot.”

CU:  Do you plan on taking a visit to Clemson anytime soon?

NS:  "This summer sometime.”

CU:  What is it about Clemson that intrigues you the most, and what do you think about when Clemson comes to mind?

NS:  "The best thing about them is that it's a family place.”

CU:  What player in the NFL or college would you say you model your game after?

NS:  “Von Miller.“
