ACC Game Previews

With both Clemson and Florida State off this week, there are only 4 games involving ACC teams. Georgia Tech looks to rebound against Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest will battle it out in Winston-Salem, North Carolina will tangle with rival ECU, and Maryland and Virginia will play for 1st place in the conference.

THE GAME: Conference leadership will be at stake Saturday as undefeated Maryland returns home to the friendly confines of Byrd Stadium to host Virginia in the Jefferson-Pilot TV game of the week ... the Cavaliers have won the last nine meetings but still trail in the series 37-26-6 ... Virginia has won the last four meetings in College Park ... Maryland's last home win in the series was a 17-6 decision in 1991.

THE COACHES: Al Groh (Virginia '67) is 3-1 in his first year at Virginia and 29-41 in seven seasons overall ... Ralph Friedgen (Maryland '69) is 4-0 in his first season with the Terps.

VIRGINIA: Bryson Spinner (194 yards)and Matt Schaub (90) both established career-highs for passing yardage in Saturday's win over Duke ... Spinner is third in the ACC and 28th nationally in passing efficiency and has thrown two TD passes in three of UVa's four games in 2001 ... as a team, UVa has thrown nine TD passes this season, already surpassing the total of eight all of last season ... WR Billy McMullen leads the team in receptions (25) and receiving yardage (291) ... McMullen is the first Virginia player in history to have two TD receptions in three straight games; leads the ACC in TD receptions (7) and is 10th on Virginia's all-time receiving yardage list with 1,315 yards ... through their first three games, the Cavaliers have nine QB sacks after totaling only 15 the entire season a year ago.

MARYLAND: The Terps are 4-0 for the first time since 1995 and just the second time since 1978 ... Maryland is ranked (25th) in the AP poll for the first time since Sept. 24, 1995 ... Terps lead the nations in interceptions (10) ... Tony Jackson and Tony Okanlawon are tied for the league lead and are sixth nationally, with three interceptions ... sophomore Bruce Perry leads the nation in rushing yards per game (169.5) ... Perry has rushed for 100 yards or more in his first four career starts ... Brooks Barnard leads the ACC and is ninth in the nation in punting (45.5) ... junior LB E.J. Henderson leads the team, and is second in the ACC in tackles per game (13.2) ... the Terps are second in the ACC and 12th nationally in rushing offense averaging 229.8 yards per game

THE GAME: 17th-ranked Georgia Tech has held the upper hand in this long-time rivalry that was first contested in 1933 ... the Yellow Jackets have won six in a row and 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Blue Devils taking a 38-29-1 lead in the series ... Duke's only victory in the 1990s was a 27-12 decision in Atlanta in 1994 ... the Jackets have won five in a row in Durham ... the two teams have played one another every year since 1933, making it Tech's second-oldest continuous rivalry.

THE COACHES: George O'Leary (New Hampshire '68) is 48-29 in his seventh year at Tech, including a 6-0 mark against the Blue Devils ... Carl Franks (Duke '83) is 3-23 in his third season at Duke.

GEORGIA TECH: In his last two games against the Blue Devils, WR Kelly Campbell has 17 receptions for 317 yards and one TD ... Tech has won its last three ACC road games and is 13-12 overall on the road in league games under O'Leary ... Campbell is eighth on the ACC's career receiving yardage list (2,512), 10th in career TD receptions (23) and 18th in career receptions (158) ... TB Joe Burns is seventh on the school's career rushing list with 1,815 yards; has scored at least one TD in 10 of his last 12 games ... QB George Godsey leads the ACC and is second nationally in passing efficiency; has passed for 200 yards or more in 11 of his last 12 games and two or more TD passes in 10 of his last 15 starts ... DUKE: Chris Douglas accounted for 200 all-purpose yards against Virginia Saturday, marking the third time in four games that he has totaled 200 yards or more in all-purpose yardage ... Douglas leads the nation in all-purpose yardage, averaging 212.0 yards per game; is sixth in the ACC in rushing (75.0) ... Douglas is also fourth in the ACC and 45th nationally in kickoff returns (24.3) and is already 26th on the ACC's career kickoff return yardage list with 1,179 yards ... junior QB D. Bryant is sixth in the ACC in total offense (190.2) ... TE Mike Hart had four catches for 61 yards against UVa extending his consecutive game streak of catching at least one pass to 16 straight games.

THE GAME: North Carolina takes a break from conference play when the Tar Heels host Conference USA foe East Carolina in Kenan Stadium ... this is the first meeting between the two schools since 1981 ... the Tar Heels lead the series 6-1-1 with the tie coming in 1979, 24-24.

THE COACHES: Steve Logan (Tulsa '75) is 61-46 in his 10th season at East Carolina ... John Bunting(North Carolina '72) is 2-3 in his first season at UNC and 40-16 in five years overall.

NORTH CAROLINA: UNC's Kory Bailey had two touchdown receptions for the first time in his career in Saturday's 17-9 win over NC State ... after dropping three straight games to open the season, the Tar Heels have won two in a row and play five of their last seven games at home ... Carolina's first five opponents are a combined 17-2 with four ranked in this week's AP poll ... freshman Darian Durant came off the bench against NC State to complete 10 of 14 passes for 128 yards and two TDs ... Durant leads the team and is fifth among all freshmen nationally with 539 yards passing ... DE Julius Peppers has 25 career QB sacks, which ranks second all-time at UNC and 11th in ACC annals ... senior QB Ronald Curry is second at UNC in career total offense (5,354) and third in passing yardage (4,337) ... Curry is also 10th on the ACC quarterback career rushing chart with 1,017 yards ... Kory Bailey caught five passes for 58 yards and two TDs against NC State and moved from eighth to sixth on the school's all-time reception list with 110 catches ... UNC leads the ACC and is 20th nationally in total defense (113.6).

EAST CAROLINA: RB Leonard Henry is 5th nationally in rushing yards per game (137.5) and 10th in all-purpose yardage (166.0) ... senior QB David Garrard threw for 192 yards and two TDs in Saturday's 44-30 loss at Syracuse ... Garrard is 41st nationally in total offense (222.75); has passed for 834 yards and six TDs on the year ... the Pirates are seventh in the nation in kickoff returns (30.2).

NC State leads the ACC's third most-played rivalry 57-31-6 ... the two teams have split the last four meetings ... Wake has won the last two meetings in Groves Stadium but are 5-11 overall against the Pack on their home turf.

THE COACHES: Chuck Amato (NC State '69) is 10-5 in his second year at the helm of the Wolfpack ... Jim Grobe is 2-2 in his first season at Wake Forest and 35-35-1 in seven seasons overall.

NC STATE: TB Ray Robinson ran 14 times for 68 yards in Saturday's loss to UNC and moved into seventh place on the school's career rushing list with 2,230 yards ... Robinson is also 10th at State in all-purpose yardage (3,030) ... sophomore QB Philip Rivers is seventh among Pack career passing yardage leaders (3,818), fifth in career TD passes (29) and ninth in total offense (3,713) ... Rivers tied a school record with his fifth career 300-yard passing game (306 vs. UNC) and is second in the ACC and 27th nationally in total offense (248.7) ... LB Levar Fisher leads the ACC in tackles per game (16.3) ... NC State is ninth nationally in turnover margin (+1.67) ... over his last seven games WR Bryan Peterson has 29 catches for 378 yards.

WAKE FOREST: TB Tarence Williams is second in the ACC and is 27th nationally in rushing yards per game (105.0) ... Wake Forest rushed for 265 yards against FSU Saturday and leads the ACC in rushing yards per game averaging 231.8 yards per game ... the 231.8 per game mark is the Deacons' highest per game average since a 304.0 per game average in 1971 ... QB James MacPherson is 15th on the school's career passing yardage list with 1,875 yards ... senior John Stone had a career-high 233 all-purpose yards against FSU ... Stone is 14th on the ACC's all-time kickoff return yardage list with 1,508 yards ... the Deacs have allowed only two quarterback sacks in its first four games ...
