Jim Grobe Quotes

"Talent wise, I didn't know if we had any chance to compete this fall," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe during his weekly conference call with the media. "Where a lot of teams are 4-4 and would be disappointed, I think we are getting the most out of our kids right now.'

Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe is 17-15 during his first 2.5 years in Winston-Salem, but he is 0-2 against Clemson. His teams have been competitive against the Tigers however, losing 21-14 in 2001 at Groves Stadium, and 31-23 last year in Death Valley.

On Last Week's Loss to Florida State:
Grobe: We got beat by a pretty good football team. I thought our kids played really hard. It was a tough environment to play in but we made too many mistakes in the kicking game. I just think now we have to regroup and get ready for Clemson.

Comments on Wake Forest's Recent Struggles:
Grobe: I think the #1 thing is our schedule. Even in the top 25 I'd give anything in the world right now to have their schedule. We are playing good people, and when you outside the league and played the teams that we've played and then play in the ACC, it's not hard to figure out. We're a football team that is young.

Honestly, I didn't know if there was a team on our schedule this year we could beat going into the season. Talent wise, I didn't know if we had any chance to compete this fall. Where a lot of teams are 4-4 and would be disappointed, I think we are getting the most out of our kids right now. And I think more than anything else we would have liked to win some more football games and it's not getting any easier. The big thing is that we are a young football team and playing a really brutal schedule.

On the Development of QB Cory Randolph:
Grobe: First of all, Cory's got a lot of ability, but he is a young guy. So we knew going into the season we knew he going to make the kinds of mistakes that young guys tend to make. The flipside to that is that he's not getting a lot of help right now. A lot of the things that have happened to Cory Randolph this fall have been a result of the players around him.

I think that early in the year, our offensive line was actually poor during the early part of the year. We were spotty against Florida State, and I don't think our running backs have done a good job blocking. He's a young that we expect a lot of in the future, and hopefully the future is now. Our other 10 guys are going to have to help him out a little bit.
