Q&A with Charlie Whitehurst
What are your thoughts on the whole ordeal with Coach Bowden?
Whitehurst: Well, its out there, and if somebody is going to ask you about football, they are going to ask about it. I don't know how to answer that to be honest with you. Let's just go out and win as many games as we can and let that all take care of itself.
So are you just trying to ignore it as much as you can at this point?
Whitehurst: Yeah, you try to. You don't want put more pressure on yourself or on the team. But it's definitely out there, and you realize that you are playing for more than wins and losses.
Going back to last week, did the way Wake Forest played on offense put some extra pressure on you because you knew you wouldn't be getting a lot of possessions in the game?
Whitehurst: Yeah. I think we got it once during the first quarter last week. We moved the ball well, but we didn't score. And that's the thing, we did move the ball throughout the game pretty well, but if you don't put it in the endzone, it's tough because they are such a running team and they have a time consuming offense.
What do you think has been the problem in the redzone for you guys lately?
Whitehurst: I don't know. It just seems like on third down, we can't convert. It might be me on one play, or someone else on another play. We just need to start making some of those 3rd down conversions and make some plays to get some points on the board.
What are you expecting out of the atmosphere in Death Valley this Saturday evening against Florida State?
Whitehurst: It will be awesome, probably like the Georgia game. This one probably has more at stake because it's late in the year and teams are jockeying for position, so I expect it to be intense and exciting. Hopefully we can go out there and compete and maybe pull off the win.
Do you think that this team has another Georgia Tech game in it?
Whitehurst: I hope so. We haven't played well in a while even though we've improved in a lot of different areas, but I think that was our most complete game of the year. I think we have some more of those games in us. I guess you could say if we do, then we need to use it during this game.
Will the atmosphere Saturday night possibly help this team pull together and play better?
Whitehurst: Yeah, I think so. You factor the situation in with the coaches right now and that we got beat pretty bad last week, the time is right for us. Hopefully we can gel and go out and bring home a big victory.
Is some of the hoopla surrounding the "Bowden Bowl" kind of gone now that this is the fifth time this has happened? Do you focus more on the team now instead of the coaches?
Whitehurst: Yeah, I think so. It's just kind of wearing off and it's just Clemson versus Florida State now. I know they are a good team and they won't take us lightly, that's for sure. I expect a good game on both sides of the ball and I think it will be close.
