Clemson Pounds Gardner-Webb

Chris Hobbs scored 18 points as the Clemson Tigers cruised out to a 53-29 halftime lead, and then held on for the 86-55 victory over Gardner-Webb. It was the largest margin of victory for a Clemson coach's first game since 1916.

After falling behind 14-9 early in the first half, the Clemson Tigers used a 21-2 run, including two massive dunks by Olu Babalola to help turn a close game into a laugher.

Gardner-Webb would get no closer than 17 points after falling behind behind by that margin with just over 5 minutes to play in the first half.

The Tigers were paced by four players who scored in double digits, including Babalola with 15, Chris Hobbs with 17, Shawan Robinson with 10, and Chey Christie with 10.

One of the cornerstones of an Oliver Purnell coached team is balanced scoring, and if the first game is any indication, the Tigers will indeed have a "team first" attitude this season.

"We want to share the basketball," Purnell said before the game. "We don't have one offensive threat that we can consistently go to."

Another cornerstone of the new coaching regime at Clemson is rebounding. The Tigers outrebounded Gardner-Webb 59-32.

Gardner-Webb, which was known for spreading the floor and getting wide open looks from behind the arc, finished 9-of-28 from three point land. The Tigers attempted 14 3-point shots, and converted 6.

The Bulldogs had South Carolina on the ropes just a few nights ago in Columbia, leading in the final minutes before falling to the Gamecocks by 83-74.

The Tigers will face High Point and Wofford next week before facing their first true test of the season the following week against the Purdue Boilermakers.
