Track & Field Opens Indoor Season This Weekend

The Clemson men's track and field team will open its 2003-04 indoor season this weekend, as the Tigers host the Clemson Opener on Friday and Saturday.

This weekend's meet will serve as the inaugural event in the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility, completed earlier this fall. Sixteen men's teams will be present at the Clemson Opener, including Appalachian State, Charlotte, The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Tech, Morehouse, NC Central, Radford, Savannah State, South Carolina State, Tennessee, Western Carolina and Winthrop.

Thirty-eight Tigers will compete in 15 events this weekend. Michael Bolling, Larry Griffin, Rick Hill, Ryan Hunter, Brent Hobbs, Robert Ibeh, George Kitchens, Ryan Koontz and Ronald Richards will represent Clemson in the 60m dash, and Hill, Hunter, Hobbs, Koontz and Ibeh will double in the 60m hurdles. Roy Cheney, Rashad Gardner, Scott Kautz and Lydell Perry will also compete in the hurdles. Darius Acker, Bolling, Warren Eure, Perry and Richards will contest the 300m, and Marquis Andrews, Cheney, Gardner and Kautz will represent Clemson in the 500m. The Tigers' 800m runners will include Hill, Hobbs, Hunter, Koontz and Ahmad Rutherford. Greg Isaacs, Matt Pimentel and David Smith will compete in the unseeded section of the 3000m, while Derrick Wyatt and Matt Clark compete in the seeded 3000m race. Mike Foley, John Palumbo, Clay Pendleton, Sean Reilly and Eric Soder will compete in the mile run, and the Tigers will field teams in the distance medley relay and 4x400m relay races.

In the field events, Rick Hill, Ryan Hunter and Adam Klotzbach will compete in the pole vault. Ben Daniels, Hobbs, Koontz, Adam Linkenauger, Terrance McDaniel and Matt Morgan will represent Clemson in the high jump, and Brit Barrow, Jason Bell, Hobbs, Hunter, George Kitchens, Koontz and McDaniel will compete in the long jump. Bell and Barrow will also compete in the triple jump for Clemson, In the throws, Danny Alge, Nick Caramanico, Derek Gilson, Matt Lombardi will compete for the Tigers in the weight throw, and Caramanico, Gilson, Hill, Hunter and Lombardi will also contest the shot put.
