Purnell Lands One of North Carolina's Best

Julius Powell, one of the top prospects in North Carolina's Class of 2005, reached a decision. The 6-8 forward out of Newton (NC) Newton-Conover will play his ball in the ACC with the Clemson Tigers. Powell is the second big time commitment for Purnell in the 2005 class.

The Clemson Tigers have it rolling in the Class of 2005. Last month, Calera (AL) High forward Joey Cameron, a member of our Class of 2005 Top 25, picked Oliver Purnell's squad.

The 6-8 Powell has gotten off to a fast start and is averaging 25.2 points per game. He visited Clemson's campus three times unofficially, twice since Purnell took the job.

"I just really like Coach Purnell," Powell said. "He's really a great guy. I feel that he can help me become the best player that I can become."

"Coach Nickelberry showed a whole lot of interest. They showed more interest than any other school that I've been looking at."

Powell said that Wake Forest, North Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia had shown interest but Clemson was the first school to offer from his list and moved quickly to lock him down.

"Now I can just focus on getting my grades as high as they can be and stuff like that. "

And, Powell should have some players around him to help the cause once he arrives on campus. "Cheyenne Moore, James Mayes and Joey Cameron … I think it'll be really exciting."
