NC Defensive MVP Post Game Interview

Rockingham superstar Dannell Ellerbe's impressive performance in Saturday's Shrine Bowl was good enough to earn him the North Carolina Defensive MVP award. On a field full of some of the nations top rate linebackers, Ellerbe had the most impressive performance of all.

The 6-1, 185-pound speedster had 1 interception, 2 sacks and knocked down a 2 point conversion pass as the Sandlappers tried to tie the game with a two point conversion. How did Ellerbe feel about earning the defensive MVP award? "It feels good. I didn't know I was going to get it. I just wanted to come out here and play hard."

Ellerbe was pleased with the defensive MVP trophy, but he would have traded it for a victory over Independence in the state semi-finals. "It feels a little better, but it's not what I wanted. I wanted this but I wanted the ring to. We should have one that game. That game was more important to me."

What schools are you looking at right now? "Tennessee, Clemson, North Carolina State and Georgia. That's where I will be taking visits."

The Richmond Country standout needed a few days to adjust to his new surroundings and his new teammates. "At first during the week I was a little home sick. I was ready to come back. All the practices were killing me. Yesterday and Wednesday they kind of let up on us a little bit. Everybody started to know each other better."

Ellerbe spent most of the afternoon in the South Carolina backfield and he credited the difficult practice schedule for the performance. "We practiced hard this week in the two-a-days. We couldn't help but come out here and play this way after the way we practiced."

We will continue to keep you updated on this outstanding linebacker from North Carolina, right up through signing day 2004.
