Merling Commits to Clemson

What we orginally thought was going to occur late last week, actually went down last night. Memphis tight end Phillip Merling committed to Clemson offensive coordinator Brad Scott yesterday. Merling is the 21st verbal commitment in the 2004 recruiting class.

The Clemson Tigers added the services of former Calhoun County star Phillip Merling yesterday, when the 6-foot-6, 245 pound tight end committed to offensive coordinator Brad Scott in a telephone call.

"I committed to Clemson last night," said Merling. "I'm just glad that all of this is behind me now."

Merling, who is now the 21st verbal commitment in the 2004 class, is expected to play on offense for the Tigers next year. "They like me as a tight end. That's the position they were recruiting me at."

The Cordova High School star caught 22 balls for 325 yards and 1 touchdown during his senior season.

"As a tight end, I think I can do some damage with how they throw the football," added Merling. "I'm just looking foward to getting down there. I like Coach Scott and I really like the offense. Those were probably the two things that attracted me to Clemson in the first place."

Phillip will visit Clemson officially this weekend and made his final decision on the Tigers over South Carolina and Arkansas. We will continue to keep you updated on Phillip Merling, right up through signing day.
