The Clemson Tigers added the services of former Calhoun County star Phillip Merling last weekend, when the 6-foot-6, 245 pound tight end committed to offensive coordinator Brad Scott in a telephone call.

This weekend, Merling took the short flight into Clemson for his official visit, and by all accounts, things went very well.

"It went really well," said Merling's aunt Sunday afternoon. "He had a great time from what I hear but he's going to be stuck there for an extra day because of the weather."

So, will Merling continue to hold firm with his commitment to Clemson?

"Oh yes," she added. "There's no changing that at all. He's happy to get down there and his visit went well."

The Cordova High School star caught 22 balls for 325 yards and 1 touchdown during his senior season.

"As a tight end, I think I can do some damage with how they throw the football," said Merling in an interview with last week.

"I'm just looking foward to getting down there. I like Coach Scott and I really like the offense. Those were probably the two things that attracted me to Clemson in the first place."
