ACC Game Previews

There are five games involving ACC teams this week, including the Thursday night showdown between North Carolina and Georgia Tech, both ranked in the top 25. Here is a look at each matchup with kickoff times, notes, TV information and betting lines.

Thursday, November 1st

THE GAME: Both the Tar Heels and the Yellow Jackets look to keep their conference title hopes alive when the two teams battle for the 37th time in a series that started in 1915 ... Tech has won three in a row to take a 17-16-3 lead in the rivalry ... the Yellow Jackets are 11-7 against UNC in Atlanta with the last three games being decided by a total of 12 points ... the Tar Heels are 3-0 in ESPN Thursday night telecasts while Tech is 6-6.

THE COACHES: John Bunting is 5-3 in first year at UNC and 43-17-2 in six seasons overall ... George O'Leary is 50-30 in his seventh season at Tech.

HEEL HYPE: The Tar Heels are the first team in ACC history to start a season 0-3 and win its next five games ... Julius Peppers leads UNC in interceptions (3) and has 30.5 career QB sacks, which ranks the junior DE second all-time at UNC and is sixth in ACC annals ... freshman QB Darian Durant is 26th nationally in passing efficiency (139.9) ... in four games versus ranked opponents, Durant has completed 37 of 63 (58.7) for 411 yards and five TDs ... senior QB Ronald Curry is UNC's all-time leader in total offense mark with 5,832 yards and is second in passing yardage (4,654) ... Curry needs only 30 yards to pass Jason Stanicek (1991-94) as the school's all-time passing leader.

BUZZ BITS: Junior PK Luke Manget leads the ACC in scoring (1.71) and has made an ACC-record 118 straight PATs ... Manget is third on Tech's career scoring list with 223 points ... Kelly Campbell is 10th nationally in receptions (7.0) and17th in receiving yardage (95.3) ... Campbell is also eighth on the ACC's career receiving yardage list (2,771), 9th in career receptions (181) and 10th in TD receptions (23) ... Joe Burns is fourth in the ACC in rushing (89.9) and is sixth on the school's career rushing list with 2,098 yards; ... QB George Godsey ranks 16th nationally in passing efficiency ... Godsey has passed for 200 yards or more in 14 of his last 15 games and has two or more TD passes in 13 of his last 18 starts ... Godsey is fourth on Tech's career passing yardage list with 4,743 yards ... DE Greg Gathers has nine QB sacks in the first six games of the season and is Tech's all-time sack leader with 29.

THE GAME: Virginia returns home to the friendly confines of Scott Stadium for the first of four straight home games to end the 2001 season when the Cavaliers host a Wake Forest club looking to rebound from Saturday's 28-17 loss to Clemson ... UVa has won 17 in a row over the Deacons and lead the series by a 31-11 margin ... the Cavaliers' 17-game winning streak is the longest current winning streak by one ACC team over another and the second-longest such streak in ACC history.

THE COACHES: Jim Grobe is 3-4 in his first season at Wake Forest and 36-37-1 in seven years overall ... Al Groh is 3-5 in his first year at UVa and 29-45 in seven seasons overall.

DEACON DETAILS: TB Tarence Williams has five 100-yard games this season and is second in the ACC and is 27th nationally in rushing yards per game (98.7) ... in his last two games, sophomore Fred Staton has rushed for 99 yards against Duke and 95 yards versus Clemson ... Staton is ninth in the ACC in rushing (55.0) and has scored a TD in four straight games ... QB James MacPherson is 14th on the school's all-time passing yardage list with 2,192 yards .... John Stone is 10th on the ACC's all-time kickoff return yardage list with 1,634 yards ... the Deacs have allowed a league-low 10 QB sacks in its first seven games ... freshman Jason Anderson has caught a pass in seven straight games ... DE Nate Bolling is sixth for sixth on Wake's all-time tackles-for-losses list with 32.

CAV COPY: For the first time in 50 years, the Cavaliers close the regular season with straight home games ... the 1951 squad won its final six games, including the last four at home, en route to an 8-1 overall record ... UVa will become only the fourth team in ACC history to close the regular season with four straight home games ... junior LB Angelo Crowell is fourth in the ACC in tackles (12.4) ... Virginia is fourth in the ACC with 19 QB sacks, which is four more than last year's total of 15 ... freshman Alvin Pearman is eighth in the ACC in all-purpose yardage (98.5) and fifth in punt returns (9.2) ... Billy McMullen is tied for fourth on UVa's all-time reception list (114) and sixth in receiving yardage (1,708).

THE GAME: Maryland's 12th-ranked Terrapins take a break from conference play when they host the Trojans of Troy State in Byrd Stadium ... this is the first meeting between the two schools on the gridiron ... Maryland has won eight in a row against non-conference opponents in Byrd Stadium.

THE COACHES: Larry Blakeney is 96-32-1 in his 11 year at Troy State ... Ralph Friedgen is 7-1 in his first season with the Terps.

TROY TIPS: The Trojans have won three in a row and stand at 4-3 on the year ... this is Troy State's first game ever against an ACC opponent ... the Trojans are 1-4 against Florida State playing the Seminoles five times between 1947 and 1951 ... Maryland is the third nationally-ranked opponent that Troy State has faced this season ... the Trojans also lost to No. 2 Nebraska 42-14 and No. 1 Miami 38-7 in road games ...in both of those games, Troy State either tied or had the lead in the first half ... the Trojans have won the last 32 games when they held the lead going into the fourth quarter.

TERPITUDES: Maryland is ranked 15th in this week's AP poll and No. 16 in the USA Today/ESPN ranking ... sophomore TB Bruce Perry leads the ACC and is 10th nationally in rushing (127.0) and became only the sixth 1,000-yard rusher in Terp history with 1,016 yards ... Perry is second in the ACC in all-purpose yardage (168.8) and 10th in receptions (3.9) ... WR Guilian Gary has caught a pass in 19 straight games and leads the team in receptions (33) and yards (481); has at least one reception in 19 straight games ... Gary is tied for 10th on Maryland's all-time reception list with 97 catches and is 11th among career receiving yardage leaders with 1,305 yards ... senior DB Tony Okanlawon leads the ACC and is fifth nationally with five interceptions in seven games (0.71) ... senior QB Shaun Hill is fifth in the ACC in total offense (208.4); over the last four games has averaged 302.3 yards per game in total offense ... junior P Brooks Barnard, a Ray Guy semifinalist, is first in the ACC and 10th nationally in punting (44.5).

THE GAME: The Blue Devils play their final home game of the 2001 season when they host long-time-rival NC State for the 77th time in series that dates back to 1924 ... the Blue Devils lead the rivalry 39-32-5, but the Wolfpack has won the last seven in a row and 10 of the last 11 meetings ... six of the last eight meetings have been decided by seven points or less ... NC State has won five of the last seven games in Wallace Wade Stadium.

THE COACHES: Chuck Amato is 12-7 in his second year at the helm of the Wolfpack ... Carl Franks is 3-27 in his third season at Duke.

PACK POINTS: NC State's 24-0 shutout of visiting Virginia was the Pack's first shutout in conference play since a 16-0 win over Duke in 1990 ... QB Philip Rivers has completed 20 or more passes in seven straight games ... only a sophomore, Rivers is already fifth on State's career passing yardage list (4,748), seventh in total offense (4,326) and third in career TD passes with 35 ... Ray Robinson ran for 105 yards and two TDs against UVa marking his first 100-yard effort in 11 games ... Robinson has led the Pack in rushing in eight straight games and is third on the school's career rushing list with 2,498 yards and is sixth in all-purpose yardage (3,458) ... NC State is 18th in the nation in turnover margin (+0.86) ... linebackers Levar Fisher (14.6) and Dantonio Burnette (13.5) rank 1-2 in the ACC in tackles per game.

DEVIL DATA: Sophomore tailback Chris Douglas rushed for a career-high 169 against Vanderbilt and moved into fifth place in the ACC in rushing (85.0) ... Douglas had 191 all-purpose yards against the Commodores and extended his streak of having 100-or-more all-purpose yardage to 11 straight games; is fourth nationally in all-purpose yards (184.6) ... Douglas also moved into 17th on the ACC's career kickoff return yardage list with 1,378 yards ... TE Mike Hart had three catches for 17 yards against Vandy and extended his consecutive game streak of catching at least one pass to 20 straight games ... junior QB D. Bryant is sixth in the ACC in total offense (203.9) ... Ronnie Hamilton leads the ACC and is fourth nationally in punt returns (16.3).

THE GAME: A full house is expected for this one as the 16th-ranked Seminoles and the 19th-ranked Tigers tangle in "Bowden Bowl III" in a regionally-televised affair on ABC ... FSU has won nine in a row in the rivalry and leads the series by a 12-2 margin ... the Seminoles are 6-0 in "Death Valley".

THE COACHES: Bobby Bowden is 320-89-4 in 36 years overall, including a 247-57-4 mark in 26 seasons at Florida State ... Tommy Bowden is 20-11 in his third year at Clemson and 38-15 in five seasons overall.

NOLE NOTES: FSU has been ranked in every AP poll since the fifth week of the 1989 season spanning 206 consecutive weeks ... WR Atrews Bell caught four passes for 104 yards and one TD against Maryland and has had at least one catch in 20 straight games ... freshman QB Chris Rix threw for a season-high 350 yards and five touchdowns against Maryland; has thrown at least one TD pass in each of his first seven games ... Rix leads all freshmen and ranks 9th nationally in passing efficiency (158.8) and is 20th in total offense (261.0) ... over their last three games the Seminoles have averaged 217.0 yards per game rushing ... following Saturday's win over Maryland head coach Bobby Bowden moved into third on the NCAA Division I-A all-time victory list with 320 career wins.

TIGER TIDBITS: QB Woodrow Dantzler is fifth in the nation in total offense (308.7), 24th in passing efficiency (140.3), 31st in rushing (96.9) and 87th in scoring (6.0) ... Dantzler has had 200 yards or more of total offense in 21 of his last 26 games and in three road games this year has averaged 421.7 yards per game in total offense ... TB Travis Zachery is third among school career rushing leaders with 2,844 yards; is tied for fourth among ACC career touchdown leaders (46) and tied for 10th on the league's all-time scoring list with 276 points ... the Tigers are averaging 21.5 points and 354.3 yards in four home games this season versus 37.7 points and 485.7 yards per game in three road contests ... WR Derek Hamilton leads all ACC freshmen and is second nationally in receptions (5.29) ... 13 of Clemson's 16 catches versus Wake Forest were by freshmen.
