It was a scholarship offer from Tennessee. It is offer No. 12 for the player who is affectionately called "Big Byrd". The Vols join LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, Georgia and others that have offered him a scholarship.

"I called Tennessee assistant (Dan) Brooks on Wednesday and he put me on the phone with Coach Fulmer," said Byrd.

"Coach Fulmer and I talked for about 15 minutes. He was really nice and down to earth. Coach Fulmer told me they really liked me, but he never said anything about an offer. So I was really surprised and excited when I saw the scholarship offer. I think Tennessee wanted to surprise me ... they succeeded. I look forward to meeting everyone next weekend.

"My position coach at North Augusta, Steve Mixon, played at South Carolina and said it was the loudest atmosphere in college football at Tennessee. Coach Mixon said they had to use hand signals for the entire game. I can't wait to experience that environment at a Tennessee game this fall.

"This has been a dream week ... offers from the defending national champion (LSU), Virginia and now Tennessee. I don't know if it can get any better. I really don't."

We will continue to keep you updated on C.J. Byrd, right up through signing day 2005.
