Tigers Pound Birmingham Southern

ATHENS, GA - It wasn't pretty but Clemson outscored Birmingham Southern 10-6 to advance to the winner's bracket in the NCAA Athens Regional.

Box Score

Tony Sipp's double in the 2nd inning powered the Tigers to a 6-run inning; and even though Clemson struggled to put Birmingham Southern away, they never relinquished the lead back to the Panthers.

"Big innings win ball games and we were on the wrong end of a big inning tonight," said Birmingham Southern Head Coach Brian Shoop. The game was the first NCAA Baseball Tournament contest ever for the Panther program.

"The first games are always the most difficult ones," said Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett of his team's effort and the Panthers inaugural experience.

Leggett thought that the Tigers had scored enough runs early in the game to win it but that the Panthers would not go away. "I thought that we distanced our selves in the 2nd inning but they came right back in the 3rd with 3 runs," he said.

Starting pitcher Robert Rohrbaugh struggled against Birmingham Southern allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits. He was replaced by Steven Jackson.

"Our starting pitching has got to step up," said Leggett of Rohrbaugh's difficulties against the Panthers.

Leggett's relief was outstanding, however. When he inserted reliever Josh Cribb in the 5th the Panthers went scoreless for the rest of the way. They managed only one hit against him.

"If I can come in and stop the bleeding it helps out our starting pitchers a lot," Cribb said.

After Cribb stopped the Birmingham Southern bats, the Tigers continued to put runs up on the board. The Tigers failed to score in only three innings.

"We were able to scratch a couple of runs along the way," said Leggett.

The Tigers take on Georgia at Foley Field Saturday at 3 PM. The game is being broadcast on CSS.
