Clemson Grabs One From Maryland

Though Tony Nelson committed last week, it came as a surprise to many Clemson fans that the Germantown (Md.) Northwest running back made the pledge. CUTigers/'s Miller Safrit broke the story first earlier this afternoon with this report.

"I committed to Clemson," says the 5-foot-10, 205-pounder. "I went down there and I liked it a lot. I felt it in my heart that I belonged there."

Nelson, whose other offer was from Marshall, was not thinking about committing when he attended the Tigers' camp last week. However, things fell into place, and he had many reasons to choose.

"It is close to my dad, he lives in Georgia, and I like the coaches. They liked the way I looked on film, my hands catching the ball, and my grades in the classroom."

Taking over in the latter part of his junior season as the starting running back, Nelson's best days are ahead of him. His potential should start to shine this fall, as he works hard to improve his game.

"I'm good at recognizing defenses, blocking, and making plays. I am working on protecting the ball a little more, and I think I can be a better player."

Nelson becomes the first running back in the 2005 class, and the 4th verbal commitment at Clemson University. OL Barry Humphries, ATH Tyler Grisham, and WR Rendrick Taylor have already pledged their commitment to the Tigers. Top Stories
