Countdown to Kickoff: #53 Tommy Sharpe

Sharpe will enter fall practice as the first team center ahead of redshirt sophomore Dustin Fry. While Fry outweighs Sharpe by more than 35 pounds, the rising senior has managed to hold down a spot on the first team for 16 of the last 17 games.

Quick Bio
Sharpe is an original walk-on who won the starting center job over the course of the 2002 season. He was a second-team all-region selection at center during his senior season at Westover High School.
The Scoop
Tommy Sharpe, a former walk-on, is a scrappy offensive lineman that has locked himself in as the Tigers' starting center. As a senior, he has earned the respect of everyone on the team and will be looked towards to provide leadership during the upcoming season.

Key Points
  • "I just need to stay healthy," said Sharpe of his offseason plans. "I am going to work on my quickness this summer, and try and get a little quicker off the ball. I am also working on double teams, things like that."

  • Sharpe will enter fall practice as the first team center ahead of redshirt sophomore Dustin Fry. While Fry outweighs Sharpe by more than 35 pounds, the rising senior has managed to hold down a spot on the first team for 16 of the last 17 games.

  • "We are probably a little more focused on winning now than we were last year," added Sharpe. "We should contend for the conference title this fall. We have a lot of young players that are waiting to show what they can do."

  • While Sharpe is playing his last year at Clemson this year, the center position appears to be great shape. "He is so big and strong and I think that he will be a great player for Clemson in the future," said Sharpe of Dustin Fry. "I expect him to have a professional career. He is that talented."

    Outlook
Sharpe isn't the most imposing lineman in school history, but he's gotten the job done when his team has needed him the most. The Clemson coaching staff feels confident with him in the game, and even though Dustin Fry will likely see more snaps this year, he'll have his work cut out for him if he's going to unseat Tommy Sharpe as the starter.
