Saturday Practice Report

The Tigers hit the practice fields again Saturday afternoon, and we've got the latest, live from Clemson University.

The Tigers took to the practice fields around 3:15 Saturday afternoon, for the second practice of the 2004 season. Curtis Baham was the only player to miss today's practice. The junior wide out has a slight separation of his right shoulder and should be back early next week.

So Far So Good
Tommy Bowden said today that his team appears to be in good condition and that the intensity level has been high through the first two practice sessions.

"The skill guys also stepped it up today," said Bowden after practice. "We look like we are in good condition. The defense made some adjustments today and looked better."

2 Freshmen Make the Cut
The NCAA Clearinghouse cleared true freshmen Rashaad Jackson and Bobby Hutchinson to practice today.

Both players had been held out of Friday's practice.

Praise for Richardson
Freshman OL Barry Richardson, who has weighed in this week at 356 pounds, was still able to finish his conditioning drills during this afternoon's practice.

"He finished today at 356 pounds, and we had another senior lineman who's 30 pounds lighter that didn't," said Tommy Bowden after practice.

Bowden was referring to starting right guard Cedric Johnson.

Surgery Friday
Redshirt freshman free safety Roy Walker will have surgery Friday and miss the entire season.

As reported yesterday, a whole host of position changes have taken place since it has been learned that Walker will be unavailable.

All of those changes, including moving Robert Reese to WHIP linebacker, will be continually evaluated over the course of the next week.

"We'll see how he does," Bowden said of Reese's move from corner to linebacker. "Physically, he's gotten bigger, but we'll evaluate that on into next week."

Special Teams Lacking Consistency
When asked how the battle was coming along with his specialists this year, Bowden said overall that he's looking for more consistency.

"Chris Wicksell would be our punter right now," said Bowden. "He's got the edge over Chason."

Chason is trying to overcome a groin injury that has limited his effectiveness through the first two practices this year.

At placekicker, Stephen Furr and Jad Dean continue to aim for a spot on the first team.

"I'd like it if one of those guys would just be more consistent for seven days," said Bowden. "Then I'd just come out an announce the guy."

Bowden listed Dean and Furr as "neck-and-neck."
