Who Will be Our Next Commitment?

The question that seems to be on everyone's mind lately- Who is going to be the next verbal commitment to Clemson University? We've got a couple of choices that could easily land in Tiger Town very soon.

One of the most popular questions this time of year, especially when it comes to recruiting, is who are we close to getting a commitment from?

Well lets answer that question right here and right now.

First of all, the addition of Roman Fry to our 2002 class is enormous. Despite what you might read posted by rival fans, this kid is a talent, a big time talent. After talking to coaches in and around the Ironton area, all you hear about is how he routinely would throw guys around who were seemingly much bigger in size. This kid is a true talent on line and he'll pay dividends in the Clemson program after redshirting his first year and putting on a few pounds. His father is expecting him to report to Clemson around 265 lbs. Give him a year in a true college football weight gaining program and he'll be fine.

Now, who can we expect to come the Tigers way over the next few weeks or so? I have three potential candidates on the table right now.

1. Reggie Merriweather (5'10,190)
Merriweather has been rumored to be deciding between Florida and Clemson for the last few weeks now. He has been on hand for several Clemson games this year, and also went down to The Swamp for the Tennessee-Florida matchup two weeks ago. The leading rusher in the state of South Carolina should be announcing his official visit dates soon, and will likely make a decision in early January. Merriweather has had Clemson high on his list after camping in Tiger Town this past summer.

Look for a big game from Merriweather in this weekend's Shrine Bowl. He's out to make a statement that he is one of the top backs in the southeast. I think he'll sign with Clemson, and he might just do it before he finishes all of his official visits.

2. Dustin Fry (6'3,305)
Fry, who has been a reported lean to several different schools over the last few months, including Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina, now appears to be favoring the Tigers again- which is great news. He is one of top offensive line prospects in the southeast and has incredible strength for a kid still in high school.

Fry has already visited North Carolina, and is set for a visit up to Maryland on January 4, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gave his verbal to the Tigers even before then. The Terps entered the recruiting race a little too late to seriously contend for his services, and his trip to North Carolina was decent, but nothing to write home about.

3. Fred Bennett (6'2, 182)
Fred Bennett, who I consider to be one of the top 3-4 players in the state, along with Hurley, Grant, and Williamson, is clearly the top defensive back in South Carolina and is also a hard Clemson lean. In fact, some reports have indicated that Bennett may have already given his commitment to Clemson, but nothing has been confirmed quite yet. Regardless, the word is that he is close to giving his verbal commitment to the Tigers. Look for a formal announcement soon after the Shrine Bowl.
