Quick Hits with Charlie Whitehurst

"I think those "major" problems might be minor problems. There have been a couple of penalties here, a couple of missed assignments there. And that's from everybody, myself included. If we can just eliminate those, I think we can be pretty good," said Charlie Whitehurst.

Charlie, I've been talking to different players this week asking them what some of the major problems of this team could possibly be. Now I'm asking you, the leader of the offense. Any thoughts?
Whitehurst: You know I think those "major" problems might be minor problems. There have been a couple of penalties here, a couple of missed assignments there. And that's from everybody, myself included. If we can just eliminate those, I think we can be pretty good, we can be pretty efficient. If you throw one or two more big plays a game in there, we can play with anybody. It hasn't gone like we would have liked. But we are working in practice to get those things corrected, and hopefully now we are going to start winning some football games.

You talk about the big plays, it seemed like those were missing against Virginia last week with the exception of your big pass to Ben Hall. Was that just because you guys didn't get enough opportunities, enough at bats?
Whitehurst: To tell you the truth, you kind of expect that from Virginia. It's hard with what they do. They play that umbrella, bend but don't break. They are extremely physical; they can stop the run with six or seven guys, and cover with the rest. We went into that game thinking that we would have to drive the football. We just didn't do that to the best of our abilities.

Talk a little about Utah State and what kind of problems they could present you on Saturday.
Whitehurst: They play hard. Their coaches have them playing really hard right now. They are kind of a two-deep shell team, but at the same time they might give you some bigger play opportunities than Virginia did. We are definitely going to try to be more consistent on third down and get those big plays. If we can do those things, then we'll be fine.

Is it important for you guys to not only go out and win Saturday, but maybe go out and make a statement? Do you guys need to really win a game by a large margin to back on track?
Whitehurst: Yeah, that certainly would be nice, but at this point, a win would be fine with us. It would be nice, but we are going out there just to win the game.
