Ford and Akingbala Dominate

CLEMSON – For the second straight game, the offense of Clemson's leading scorer Shawan Robinson was nowhere to be seen.

However, also for the second straight game, his offensive output wasn't needed as the Tigers cruised to the 83-56 victory over Norfolk State Tuesday night at a nearly empty Littlejohn Coliseum.

Picking up the slack offensively for Clemson (6-1) was the inside tandem of Sharrod Ford, who scored 23 points, which is just two shy of his career high, and Akin Akingbala, who added a career-high 16 points.

"Guys are getting us the ball and it's producing," Ford said. "It's working so why stop."

Just for good measure, when the two weren't scoring points, they were playing equally as well on the defensive end of the court. Ford had six rebounds and three blocks, while Akingbala added 10 rebounds and one blocked shot.

It was Akingbala's second double-double of his career.

"In the past, I had no sense of urgency," Akingbala said. "I'd wait 30 minutes before the game to prepare for the game. Now, I prepare three or four hours before the game. … The team really needs me to do stuff like (tonight) and get ready for the game."

Robinson, a junior who entered averaging 14.7 points per game, found the going tough. One game after he went scoreless for the first time since his freshman season, Robinson was as woeful 2-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-9 from beyond the arc.

However, it's not as though he was the only player who struggled shooting the ball from the outside.

As a team, the Tigers shot just 5-of-20 from 3-point range and 44.3 percent overall. Minus Ford's and Akingbala's shooting and Clemson was just 33 percent from the field.

"Although I'm not completely satisfied with tonight's game, I thought it was better than the other night. I guess we're making progress. The other night we got away from going inside. Tonight we stayed with it."

The defense by the Tigers, though, was impressive. They held Norfolk State to 37.5 percent shooting and forced the Spartans (3-4) into 21 turnovers.

Good defense has been the one constant for Clemson this season, maybe with the exception of the Boston College game.

After a sluggish start, the Tigers kicked things into high gear and went from trailing Norfolk State 12-9 to leading 30-13. The 21-1 run midway through the first half was all Clemson needed to secure its fourth straight win.

The run was set up by the defense.

"I think the constant pressure wore on them and we went on runs as a result," Purnell said. "I think we're going to be a team that gets on runs."

Clemson's next game is 7 p.m. Friday against The Citadel at Littlejohn Coliseum.
