SPARTANBURG - News and notes from South Carolina's 35-21 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg. <BR>

The South Carolina Sandlappers defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels, 35-21 Saturday afternoon in the 68th Annual Shrine Bowl held at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, SC.

Lakewood's J.C. Neal led the way defensively for South Carolina, with two interceptions, including one that he returned 72 yards to the North Carolina six-yard line in the third quarter. Both turnovers set up Sandlapper touchdowns.

Greenville's Jordan Sorrells paced the South Carolina on offense, completing 8-of-10 third quarter passes, including a touchdown strike to Aiken's Terrance Smith.

SC Defensive MVP: J.C. Neal
Quotes: Nobody gave us any respect this week, so we had to come out there and take it from them. I know they are pretty good, but we kept them in front of us. We believed in ourself, and we brought it back to South Carolina.

NC Offensive MVP: Montario Hardesty
Quotes: The turnovers in the third quarter really killed us, and that gave them a lot of momentum. It's been a fun week though getting to know these guys and visiting the kids.

NC Defensive MVP: Derek Nicholson
Quotes: It's very special to win this award. It's too bad we fell short, the better team won today, but I bless God for this trophy, being named the defensive MVP. They executed their gameplan well offensively, and defensively, and that's why they came out on top.
