Morris, Ill. defensive end/tight end Jamie Cumbie picked up his fifth official offer over the weekend from Notre Dame. The 6-7, 255-pound two-way player attended Notre Dame's junior day on Sunday and picked up his Irish offer.
"It's a great honor to be offered by such a great school," said Jamie Cumbie of the offer he received from coach Weis on Sunday. "To have an offer from Notre Dame is a very nice feeling."
Cumbie didn't have to wait long for his offer.
"As soon as I walked in the door coach Weis came over and offered me," Cumbie said. "I was kind of shocked. My coach told me I would probably get offered if I came, but I didn't think he'd just walk up right away and offer me. It was pretty exciting."
Cumbie said he spent considerable time with the Notre Dame coaching staff today.
"I really liked the coaches there," Cumbie said. "They all seemed very nice. I especially liked coach Weis. He's really down to earth and I really liked him."
So what did Cumbie think of his fist visit to South Bend?
"The place is pretty amazing. It was my first time there and I really enjoyed it," he said. "I was really blown away.
"To go to a school like that with all their tradition, it would be a really neat thing."
Clemson had been Cumbie's leader when we spoke with him late last week.
"(Notre Dame) is definitely up there now with them," said Cumbie. "I think they're both pretty much the same right now. I really liked it there."
The Tigers will get a visit soon, however, and a chance to make a similar impression.
"My brother is getting married in North Carolina so we're going to head down to Clemson. I think that is around March 23-24-25, somewhere around then," said Cumbie.
"I might go visit some other schools, but I don't having else really lined up right now," he added.
Cumbie said the whole recruiting experience has been a surprise for him.
"To think I have an offer from Notre Dame, and to have one this early is quite an honor," Cumbie said. "It just wants you to work that much harder. Everyone has all these expectations for you now, and you want to show that you're the real deal."
An early decision still looks likely for Morris, Ill. star.
"I was planning on making an early decision, but with all of this, it might be later than I thought," he said. "But I do still plan to make an early decision."
