Tigers Lead for Top CB

With the early departure of Justin Miller and Tye Hill playing his final season this fall, the Tigers will be looking to add some corners that can come in and play immediately. Fort Dorchester standout Byron Maxwell will be one of the top cornerbacks in the South and could give the Tigers an early gem for the 2006 signing class.

The 6-1, 175 pound prospect had an outstanding season for Fort Dorchester as a junior. "I had five interceptions. I ran one back for a touchdown. I also had a punt return for a touchdown," Maxwell told CUTigers.com in a recent interview.

On the recruiting front, the Tigers were the first to offer the Palmetto standout. "Clemson is my only offer so far. South Carolina, North Carolina State, Maryland, Virginia Tech and LSU are showing interest," said Maxwell.

When asked if he has a leader or any early favorites, Maxwell responded, "Clemson is my leader."

The prize recruit feels right at home in Tiger Town. "When I went there it felt like my home town. I went up for camp last year.

"I am a cover corner. I can lock anybody down." The scary thing is the 4.4 cornerback wants to get even faster. "This year I will try to get faster. I will also work on breaking on the ball," said Maxwell.

"I know Tye Hill will be leaving this year. I think I have a good chance for early playing time at Clemson."

Maxwell traveled to Maryland this weekend to see what the Terps have to offer. "I went up to Maryland this weekend. It was fun. It was nice."

The camp plans are not clear at this time. "Me and my dad are talking about going to South Carolina. I will probably go to Clemson. I got a letter about the Nike camp. I'm not sure if I will go there."

Interestingly enough, the star defender also plans to make an early commitment. "I would like to do it before the season starts. That way I can relax and get everyone off me," added Maxwell.
