Tigers Lose 8th Straight

Using a 15-0 run midway through the second half, the Virginia Cavaliers pulled away from the Tigers to claim a 85-71 victory. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 11-13 and 2-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Once again, the Tigers played a good game on the road, and once again, it wasn't enough. Virginia used a 15-0 run midway through the 2nd half to turn a 50-50 tie into a crushing 65-50 lead.

Roger Mason Jr. scored a team-high 23 points and was instrumental in the Cavs' big run. He forced several key turnovers in the full court press, and was outstanding from the free throw line.

"A result of their pressure and their offensive rebounds led to the win for Virginia. We played an all-around good game, but there were those 3 or 4 minutes in the second half where they turned up the intensity," said Clemson head coach Larry Shyatt.

Virginia led 44-39 at halftime thanks in part to some outstanding outside shooting early in the game. The Tigers would rally behind Chris Hobbs in the paint, and Jamar McKnight from behind the arc to tie at it 50. After that, the Cavs run sealed the deal, as Clemson would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Jamar McKnight with 18 points and Chris Hobbs with 15.

Clemson's next home game will be Wednesday night at 9:00 against Wake Forest.

Larry Shyatt Quotes:
"I think we played a very good game. Team and staff evaluated our effort level at an '8'. We felt like those first 7 or 8 minutes in the second half they might be getting a little tight. They had the zone press and we were carving it up pretty well. Once it was 50-50, they got the ball out of Edward Scott's hands, and they made other people handle the ball."

"You must look at, in any sport, how they are effectively defeating your plan. We are down 15-5 to open the game, but I'm more interested in what we can do on the offensive end. The three most important players for Virginia end up winning the game for them, we were displeased about the score. We played to win, not not to lose."

On Chey Christie
I thought he played well, he had 3 deflections and a couple of steals when we needed some excitement. He helped our comeback as well as anybody did. I liked our attitude most of the game, I thought at the 13:12 mark in the second half we were where we needed to be. Their defense stepped it up from there."

"There is no time to be discouraged, and wouldn't that be a shame. All you have to do is look left or right and somebody is worse off."
