2003 Profile: QB Syvelle Newton

Syvelle Newton, a big time quarterback out of Marlboro County, just might be the top prospect at his position in 2003. Syvelle led his team to a 14-0 record and the South Carolina AAAA Sate Title this past season. Make no mistake, he'll be one football player to lookout for in 2003.

Newton (6'2, 210) is a multi-dimensional quarterback that can do alot of damage on the ground or through the air. He's got a good arm and outstanding quickness (4.45 speed).

This past year, he passed for 1700 yards and 23 touchdowns, and also rushed for another 1921 yards and 21 more scores. He finished the season leading the state in scoring with 44 total touchdowns.

Interestingly enough, Newton has indicated that he would like to go to school where his old teammate, Tymere Zimmerman ended up at. Fortunately for Tiger fans, that happens to be Clemson University.

However, don't get too excited just yet. Newton has also admitted that he wants to stay instate and that South Carolina has been his leader for quite some time. Furthermore, the Tigers have not been pursuing him quite as hard as South Carolina lately, but that could be for a number of different reasons.

Clemson now has stockpiled talent at the quarterback position with Charlie Whitehurst, Chansi Stuckey, and Will Proctor all waiting patiently behind starter Willie Simmons. Newton could be forced to make a position change if he were to come to Clemson, he certainly has all the moves to be a serious running back prospect.

Speculation aside, the kid is a proven winner for one of the top high school football teams in the nation. He has outstanding quickness, great leadership skills, and he'll be a great player for some school at the Division I-A level.

We will continue to follow his progress for you throughout 2002.
