Clemson Holds off Florida State

Ed Scott turned in a career afternoon Saturday to helped lead the Tigers to a 87-78 win over the Florida State Seminoles. Scott scored 36 points as the Tigers improved to 13-15 overall, and 4-11 in the conference.

Ed Scott scored a career high 36 points to lead the Clemson Tigers to their 4th ACC win of the season. Scott finished the game 12-of-15 from the field, including 5-6 from behind the arc, and 7-of-8 from the foul line.

The Seminoles, who fell behind by as much as 19 points early in the second half, cut the deficit to six on Delvon Arrington's 3-pointer with 2:27 left in the game.

On the next possession Arrington stole the ball, then missed a long 3-pointer in transition. The Seminoles had two chances to tip in the rebound, but couldn't do it. That proved to be the most pivotal possession of the basketball game.

Clemson would respond from the free throw line down the stretch to secure a much needed conference victory. "The last 2 and half a minutes we made 9 out of 11 free throws, and unlike Wake Forest we were able to close it out," said Coach Shyatt.

The Tigers' final regular season game will be Wednesday night against the North Carolina Tar Heels. With a win in Chapel Hill and a little help, the Tigers will lock up 6th place in the Atlantic Coast Conference. With a loss, Clemson could possibly end up tied for last place.

"Wednesday is a tremendous opportunity for us in Chapel Hill. That is a good team with outstanding personnel at North Carolina, and don't for one minute think otherwise. We'll have our work cut out for us, but we can do it," said Shyatt.

More From Larry Shyatt:
I'm really thrilled for Carl Williams (Ed's High School Coach) and his family to be here today for Ed Scott. This had some meaning today. He had a great balance of shooting, passing, and feeding the ball inside.

"I think we've said this so often, nobody gives you anything easy in this league. I don't think with our program and where we want to go, we ought to be proud on how much we are getting better and how we are getting better. I've been proud of these guys all season all along," said Clemson Head Coach Larry Shyatt.

"Dixon is the guy that beat us in Tallahassee. He hit those three threes in a row and insted of being up by 7 we were down by 2. Tony Stockman did a good job and Christie did a good job on Dixon and that made a difference today."
