Jimmy Barthmeir is one of the top signal callers in the south this coming season. A late miss on a field goal cost his Roswell Hornets team a shot at taking eventual state champion Parkview in to overtime. "That's not something you can really blame on the kicker," said Barthmaier. "He has to stand around out there in the cold, the come in and try and tie the game. It could have happened to anyone. We played that game without our 2 best WR's, and we almost took them to overtime, so we were proud with how well we played the game."
Coming in to this season, Barthmaier is going to be counted on to carry a heavy load with such a young team. "We lost a lot this year. I think we graduated 20 seniors, and I think I'm the only starter that's coming back on offense. We've got a lot of talented players coming up; they're just young. My coach told me to expect to be in the shotgun more often this year."
Coach Timmy McFarlin knows what he has returning in his senior QB, "Jimmy brings the full package to the QB position," said McFarlin. "He has a great arm but also runs the ball well. He's a very talented athlete."
A standout baseball player as well, Barthmeir is very interested in playing both football and baseball in college. "I don't think I'm going to go to any football camps this summer. I'll be playing baseball all summer. I'd like to play both in college, and most of the schools I've talked to have said that would be OK. My summer coach has talked to me about possibly getting drafted next summer, so I don't know what I'll be doing about college. That's a long ways away," Barthmeir added with a chuckle.
Roswell may be losing 10 starters on offense, but with some young talent surrounding a talented senior quarterback, look for the Roswell offense to open things up and air it out a bit more.
