Ft. Dorchester defensive back Byron Maxwell has committed to the Clemson Tigers, CUTigers.com has learned.

Maxwell committed to Clemson assistant coach Burton Burns in a phone call earlier today.

A 6-1, 175 pound defensive back, Maxwell is the second verbal commitment for the Tigers in the 2006 recruiting class. Clemson also landed TE/DE Jamie Cumbie just last week.

Maxwell, who could play corner or safety at Clemson, chose the Tigers over offers from Virginia Tech, Florida, Louisville, South Carolina and several others.

Maxwell told CUTigers.com in a recent interview, "I am a cover corner. I can lock anybody down. This year I will try to get faster. I will also work on breaking on the ball.

"They were just the first to offer, so first come first serve. I like the coaches. Coach Burns just seems real honest to me."

The South Carolina native has also favored the Tigers throughout most of the recruiting process.

Maxwell is expected to be named a "4-star" and the No. 5 overall prospect in South Carolina when Scout.com's national star rankings are released.
