Tigers Add Large DL Commitment

The Clemson Tigers picked up their third commitment for the 2006 recruiting class earlier today in Alabama native Deantwan Whitehead.

"I made a verbal commitment today. I met with Coach Bowden and Coach Swinney. I just told them that is where I want to go," Whitehead told CUTigers.com after making his commitment.

"I loved it up there. It's a great place to be. I really liked Vickery Hall and everything it offers. I am on my way home now. I went up with a few of my teammates and we had a good time."

Deantwan is actually pronounced "De - an - twan," but his nickname is "Peanut."

Despite being injured during his junior season, Whitehead is apparently a very popular recruit amongst Division I-A schools, holding offers from Clemson, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, Louisville, and several others.

The question now concerns the firmness of Whitehead's commitment. Will the Tigers be able to hold on with signing day still eight months away?

Whitehead says, "I am going to Auburn and Georgia for visits, but they are both behind Clemson. Right now, I'll probably take my five official visits."

The Alabama native was recruited to Clemson by Dabo Swinney and Marion Hobby. Hobby was actively involved in his earlier recruitment while at Mississippi.

"I really like Coach Swinney. He is doing a great job getting players out of Alabama," added Whitehead.

The Alabama native projects as a defensive end at the next level.

Whitehead is the third verbal commitment in the 2006 recruiting class. The Tigers also have secured commitments from TE/DL Jamie Cumbie and DB Byron Maxwell.
