Whitehead Withdraws Commitment

According to several sources, Alabama native Deantwan Whitehead is no longer committed to Clemson.

Apparently Whitehead left a message for Clemson assistant Dabo Swinney Wednesday evening declaring his intentions.

Whitehead, who will still be actively recruited by the Tigers as a defensive lineman, intends to camp at Georgia and Auburn in the coming weeks.

The Alabama native was recruited to Clemson by Dabo Swinney and Marion Hobby. Hobby was also actively involved in his earlier recruitment while at Mississippi.

"I really like Coach Swinney. He is doing a great job getting players out of Alabama," said Whitehead during an interview last week.

CUTigers.com will have more on this story on Wednesday but for now, Clemson has five verbal commitments for the 2006 recruiting class after Whitehead's most recent decision.

Interestingly enough, of those five commitments, three have already been ranked among the top 20 players nationally at their position by Scout.com.

Byron Maxwell is a four-star prospect, coming in as the No. 15 cornerback prospect in the country. Ricky Sapp is a five-star prospect who is ranked as the No. 3 defensive end in the country, and Jamie Cumbie is another four-star prospect who is currently ranked as the No. 6 tight end in the country by Scout.com.
